My New Cooper S Got Hurt Bad!

I have been enjoying my new cooper s for the past two months and loving every bit of it. Well today as I was on my way home from work I see a car in my rear view mirror swerving and being chased by a row of flashing lights. Next thing I know I go spinning and get turned around until I end up the correct way on the freeway. Knowing nothing of what has happened I sit in my car as an officer approaches checking to see if I am OK.

Turns out I was hit by a Honda going over 110 mph on my rear drivers side, spinning me towards the center divider, after that it turns out that the lead officer T-bones me also at a high rate of speed landing me in the carpool lane, about three lanes from my original position.

Eventually I get out of my car, perfectlly fine by the way and see the damage of my new baby. She looked horrible! The entire drivers side was smashed in, so much so that I could not open my door. My rear drivers side strut was snapped in half, hood smashed, missing scoop, my drivers window smashed in toward me, bumpers destroyed, you name it and it happened to me. But like I said, I was ok two minor cuts from glass, but I literally felt next to nothing, my MINI kept me completely safe. But now I am left hoping that they will declare my car a junker so that I won't have to worry about faulty work making my car not the same as it was originally. I will post pictures tomorrow as soon as I can see my car again in the light but I can only hope for the best.

Holy Crap! That's awful! Sorry for you and your MINI. Pictures definitely needed - you may be the first major R56 accident on the forums.

Very glad that you are OK. It's amazing how these little cars are engineered to protect the occupants. Keep us posted on the insurance process.

Thanks guys, I am so bummed. I am hoping that if they total it that my dealer (Crevier MINI) who has been great with me so far might be able to cut me a break for the couple thousand I will be out from the insurance money. As for the moron who hit me he was seen throwing drugs out his window down the freeway and had more in his car. He hit a wall after he hit me and lost control and was tazered while trying to flee the scene. I love my MINI and would never dream of driving anything else. I just hope I can get her back soon. I just got the plates a week ago, and I want my car back more than anything.

Doubt the bad guy's insurance is paid up but the Police that hit you too should be covered by their on duty policy. You shouldn't be out a dime including rental, lost work and any injuries you may have. You may need to make some calls to pursue it though.

Wow! I'm glad you're OK. Can't honestly say the same for the drug dealing driver. When you're feeling up to it, we'd like some pictures of your valiant protector.

Man, glad you're OK. Where did this happen? Maybe this will be on TV on Police Wildest Video's. It amazes me how thoughtless these druggies can be. It is not like they are going to escape, they are just piling up more charges.

OMG That is horrible. I can't tell you how much my heart sank into my stomach when I saw your post. It reminds me of when I lost Spike. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=91102

I hope you get a new mini ASAP b/c the 2 months I had to wait for my new one were horrible. Yes please post pictures. Mini said the R-56 was supposed to be safer than previous mini's so I'm curious. Very glad you were ok. In my accident with my R-53 I hit 3 trees, a ditch, and a barbed wire fence doing over 50 and walked away without a scratch. Stay safe.

Trading licks in the triple digit range aint a good idea. Especially if you dont have all the inertia on your side. Normally this is where people shift from "is" to "was". Glad you stayed an "is". Is is good.
Hat tip to those engineers at MINI. They have taken a beating on the new look, but I think they must have got things right. That second hit is usually the coup de grace. Walking away is one hell of a good stroke!
My deepest sympathies as you move thru this mess. I hope for a speedy recovery..from all of it.
Keep us updated with what you will. We'll be rootin' for you here. Good luck.

Wow, so happy to hear that you are physically OK, and glad to hear that you seem to be handling it well too. This was so awful to happen, but so fortunate that it is a happy story of MINI safety.

Glad you are ok. I would talk with a lawyer straight away, and file a civil suit against the guy in the Honda, if for no other reason than to keep him from driving ever again. I think you can also make a case to have the police help pay for some of the damages. I know that here in Virginia, if an officer runs into someone while in pursuit, the department is responsible.

The answer to drug dealers is to allow the public to beat them to a pulp with the weapon of their choice, and then send them into the ocean on a small boat with a complete revocation of citizenship and a permanent ban from the US. Enough using our tax dollars to support these people in jail!

Too bad the Cops didn't let you have a hand at the tazer while they were at it!

Glad you're OK.

So you're in SoCal? Which freeway did this happen on and where? I didn't see anything on the news or in the papers today. Usually these types of things get some coverage (even though they happen all the time in LA).

It sounds like the car could very well be totaled, based on your description of the speeds and number of impacts. Time to push hard on the insurance company to total it so you're not dealing with damaged goods. Cars these days don't have many lives when it comes to crashes of this nature. Fixing them may make them look ok, but perform sub-par in another crash.

Don't know if it's worth the lawyer thing. You'll probably never see a dime from the guy. Luckily CA requires (I think?) uninsured motorist coverage. This should have any effect on your rates and your insurance should cover it all.

Good luck

Sorry to hear about your MINI.. but I wouldn't look for anything further from the police. Supreme court has upheld MANY times that they are not liable for accidents caused during a high speed chase. Since the suspect hit you first any further collisions would be difficult at best to prove the police at fault in.

I got nailed last year in a high speed chase in the wife's car... took me 90 minutes and a call to the local TV station to get the city cops to show back up at the scene to even check and see if we were alright. This was a 80+ MPH chase of a suspected assault case through a residential area.

Of course this is also a city where getting put on 20+ minutes hold for 911 is not uncommon

Regardless good luck with things! Hopefully your insurance company will work things out with you in regards to GAP.
