R56 My New Cooper S Got Hurt Bad!
So sorry to hear about this... but very glad you are okay and just another testament to how safe the MINI is. It sounds pretty traumatic though. And it sounds like the MINI, from what you describe will be totalled. Good luck in sorting everything out.
Again, thanks everyone. Today I will be going back to the tow yard to take pictures for everyone. For those Californian's I was traveling West on the 60 frwy just East of the 71 Interchange where I was hit. I know that their was a police helicopter above us, but I don't think it go any new attention since it was last night about 11:45pm. My problem is that I am a 21 year old college student who is trying to get this fixed in the best way financially, so that I don't have to fork out any more money on my $29,000 car.
At what point do you think a police officer would realize he is causing more harm than good to the public by continuing to chase these idiots and putting many innocent peoples lives at risk?
I am glad you are ok.
From what I gather, you don't want to fix the car. You don't want to be driving around in sub-par structure.
In late 2002, my wife was in a similar accident in our 2000 Z3. She walks away complete unhurt. From that day onward, we vowed only to drive BMW product. After the Z3 was fixed I traded it in for '03 330i.

Ouch! What a bummer. Glad you are OK. There is a lot of controversy over whether Cops should pursue at high speeds. This kind of collateral damage is why some think they shouldn't. Glad they nailed the perp.
Wow that sucks, glad to hear your ok, hopefully between the cops insurance and yours (because the other car probably didn't have insurance) you will be taken care of and not have to put any more money out of your own pocket. Keep us informed, and Good Luck!
That is just a crazy story! Glad you were okay. When I first started reading it I was thinking this had to have happened in California. Isn't that about the only state where the cops are dumb enough and also allowed to chase a vehicle for more than a few miles? I thought in most of the country the cops where not allowed to pursue a chase much more than a few miles.

Ditto
WOW!
As others have said, and it can't be said enough, thank God you are alright. If totalled, your MINI's destiny was to be with you for two months, and protect you when you needed it the most. That's not a bad legacy if, in fact, it heads to the MINI graveyard in the sky.
I saw the news coverage on the high speed chase in San Diego yesterday, but that ended in the late afternoon.
As for drugdealers
and wrecklessly endangering innocents.

Glad to hear that you walked away from what could have been a very tragic ending...
The MINI did it's job though - from what you've described, I would be surprised if it's not a total loss..as sad as that may be...
Chin up!

It's sad that you had to suffer such an ordeal. Perhaps the Police should have just let the guy go. Pay close attention to the way you are feeling, delayed reactions ie. sore neck, back etc. amazing you walked away in such good shape.
He's captured.. leave it at that - there's no guarantee that he wouldn't have stopped fleeing if the cops stopped chasing.
So sorry about your accident and am truly glad you are okay. I truly hope and wish for you to get new Mini. (I live in So. Cal. too!)
(It makes me so mad (and sad) when innocent people are accident victims in cases like yours. For the criminal, I blame the parents. They were ultimately responsible for their children turning out the way they did and have failed miserably.)

Wow! Glad you're okay. I was also involved in a similar situation two days ago (spinning at 70mph in rush hour traffic) but thankfully didn't get hit. I hope everything turns out well in the end.
Just as a side question, wouldn't OP's rates go sky high if the insurance firm decided to pay the entire amount?

Jeez, glad you're OK man. That could have been bad news. In April my daughter's 16th birthday present (01 Corolla) was totalled a month after she got it by a County Sheriff who hit her from behind at 45mph (daughter was going 20 trying to pull over to the right and stop). Officer was speeding to a stabbing incident. Officer was at fault. They paid what we paid for the car plus $500 that was put into the car and chiropractic bill. No rental. If you can get a similar deal maybe they will just get you the exact same new car that you had 2 months ago. There's no reason to depreciate a brand new car and give you less. Or if the cops won't cover it and your ins wants to depreciate it and give you less maybe the cops will make up the difference. I mean the tax alone on a new one is $2400 or so. Keep up posted on this, and good that your aren't hurt. It's just a car. The cops probabaly won't pick up the whole tab, but may help with incidentals.

I just had a 10 month old car totalled by a drunk driver in a big 'ol Toyota Tundra on the freeway. We were pushed into another car and the left wheel basically disintegrated as we slid a lane and a half over, hit the median, and slid back to where we'd started. I couldn't get anything out of the trunk afterwards because it was completely smashed in.
Ouch. But now I get a MINI.
Anyway, we're still going through all the paperwork and stuff but we're basically getting $1,800 less than we paid for the car. For 10 months of depreciation that seems ok but not great. I'd far rather have the car but oh well. They covered tax although they covered it based on the depreciated value of the car.
Glad to hear you're ok. It's amazing what these small cars can handle (I was in a Toyota Yaris). I know after living through that I value safety features in cars a lot more and I'm glad that the MINI is a very safe car.
