R56 Question about spare tire
Question about spare tire
Hello it's my first post here! I'm wondering if the $500 run flat tire option is worth getting. How much of a different is there in terms of ride comfort and handling compared to the regular 17 in performance tires? How about the weight saving? With the regular performance tires don't you have a spare tire in the trunk or somewhere that would adds like 20 lbs+ to the car?

There is no spare tire for the MCS. They come standard with runflats. Many people plan to replace the runflats with regular tires and have different schemes for spares and/or repair kits.
The Cooper comes with a spare.

The run flats are double the money to replace. The non run flats for 17" wheels are around 500.00, the runflats 1,000 to 1200.00 to mount and balance 4. I dont know if that is any concern to you or not. My question is, where do they put the spare on the MCs? Is there a way to fit a spare into the MCSs like the MCs?
The MC spare is underneath the car. The MCS' exhaust makes it about impossible to mount a spare underneath.
A can of "Fix-A-Flat" or a bottle of Slime and a small compressor usually take the place of a spare in an MCS.

Continental has come out with a runflat that's supposed to be cheaper then most of the others. You might check them out.
Not meaning to hijack a thread, but if you need some used 16s with about two-thirds tread left, I have a set to sell cheap, plus shipping [or local pickup], if anyone is interested.

I just picked up an MCS yesterday evening. Its my first car and I am extremely pleased with everything thus far. My salesman mentioned the tires were run flat and I am concerned with having to replace tires frequently because of nails, etc. I am in Queens NY and the roads are less than optimal for tires like this. Does anyone know if these tires can be patched if a nail is the culprit or something minimal like this? I can't see myself paying 1k plus for one tire if this was to happen. Id probably switch to non run flats and buy a small spare.
Thanks alot for everyone's input in this forum. You guys are the reason why i decided to pull the trigger and get my awesome chilli red mcs..

new runflats are around $280 each[ the new Conti may be less]. if you get a nail, the tire can usually be plugged if the hole isn't in the sidewall. if it's in the sidewall, it's usually time for a new or used tire.

I find that the run flats are like driving on marbles...going around a corner at a considerable speed, just hang on and hope they stick. I just got new 17" wheels and non run flats on my R56 and I couldn't be happier! The grip is much better and the ride is a little more rough, but not enough to worry about. As far as getting a flat, I just got a fix a flat kit and don't even worry about it. The new wheels weigh just 17 lbs each, compared to the 26 lbs of the stock wheels, not to mention the weight of the run flats! Go with the non run flats, I think you will be much happier!

If you get rid of runflats on a pre 07 MCS you can stick an MC doughnut in the back
I carried a regular MINI doughnut spare behind the passenger seat on my MCS. It also fits in the boot if you remove the boot lid or it can sit on the back seat.

My MCS came with 17" Crown Spokes (22.5 lbs.) and Doomlap runflats. I have a set of Center Line RMP wheels (16 lbs.) and I plan to have Michelin Pilot Exhalto PE2s mounted. I'm hoping for both better handling and a smoother ride.

I'm not saying that the non run flats give you that much of a harsher ride, just when I hit bumps, it seems they are a little harsh. I love the non run flats though, I had forgotten what it was like to have them!
I got rid of the runflats because the ride was extremely harsh with them on, probably augmented by some terrible roads here in the north. I picked up a MINI donut spare and normally carry it in the boot. It fits, even under the lid, you just need to pull the bottom of the wheel to the back and tilt it forward so the top hits the seatbacks. Now this is in an R53 so I expect you could measure an R56 and compare to see if it will fit the same way.
Regarding weight, by going to SSR rims and non-runflat 16 inch tires I dropped approximately 8 lbs. of unsprung weight per wheel. Don't know what the donut spare weighs, cause I guess I don't care.

I personally just bought a cheapie cig-lighter plug in from Wally World, and a Tire repair kit and keep it in the boot of the car. Comes in especially handy when the cold/heat change affects the tire pressure and sets of the TPMS.
