More then likly no. Emmisions would be hard to pass in the US on that engine :(

I thought BMW & Mercedes are going to bring in more diesel cars...

I'm sure we will see more Diesels in the USA as time goes on. A particulate filter will probably get that motor to pass the 2007 emissions. As soon as gas hits $4.00 or $5.00 a gallon things will start to change.

I've been weighing back and forth on the Golf TDI and the Mini Cooper S for so long now. If they were to bring the Cooper D to America, that would solve my problems!

I'm very intested in the Cooper D as well for my next Mini. I emailed MINIUSA and my MA about it. I suggest all those interested do the same so that they are aware of the interest.

Email here for MINIUSA:

New diesel technology is going to be introduced by VW with a year or two that meets all 50 state emission/particulate standards, but I hardly see a R56 S as a competitor of the Golf TDI.

The real question is can BMW use the same engine in more than one car line? They would probably not sell enough MINI-Ds to justify the expense of federalizing the engine.

I think VW & Mercedes have easier decisions since they have a history of diesels and can use the same engine across several models.

In the US diesels and BMW (performance) don't go together in most car buyers minds.

Of course if gas prices stay high or go higher we might change our perceptions of "performance."

Regards,
Steve

I would pick this up in a heart beat for the fuel economy and if it would use the new (better) emission diesel fuel all the better. 64 miles per gallon! - that makes the current hybrids obsolete (prius is rated at 60). And, no batteries to worry about.

I don't think the two compete, it's just two different needs/wants I have in a car right now. The Golf is the smallest and only modern hatch back diesel powered manual transmission car I can buy right now...

I would buy one of each myself, but that would require selling my MX-5....and well, I just can't do that!

I would consider trading in my 06 MC if the MINI D came to town for sure! But for now I plan to keep my MC forever!

While everyone is talking about environment, global warming and fuel economy, GWB is still protecting his friends from the global oil companies and thus they are not forced to remove the sulphur from the Diesel as they do everywhere in Europe.

While the car companies can produce cars that are fast (MC Diesel has the same torque as the MCS) and get 50-60mpg, the inferior quality Diesel in the US kills the wide use of these cars ...

I also think the estimated 62.4mpg is using the imperial gallon which i think is like 1.2 gallons...and I wonder why they quote mpg and not kpg?

Unlike the rest of Europe the English use miles to measure both speed and distance. Just the same as us in the USA.

The ultra-low sulfur diesel since 06 is a lot better, but as you noted it is still not as low as in Europe.

They would probably not sell enough MINI-Ds to justify the expense of federalizing the engine
A Senate panel recently recommended that fleet fuel efficency standards be increased to 35 mpg from the current 25 mpg by 2020. If this bill passes, then combined with higher fuel prices there is incentive for more auto makers to improve the technology and sell diesels here and for more consumers to buy diesel cars.

The Mini D might not be for every Cooper lover, but for anyone looking for a fun to drive commuter car the Mini D would be a great alternative. Diesel engines deliver more torque than comparable gas engines. If we didn't need to replace our current commuter now we'd try to hold out for a Mini D. When the sedan goes in a few years we're hoping the diesel Mercedes will be available as a possible replacement.

Well with all the work that companies like Banks Turbo has been doing with diesels it would be yet another option for modding, that's for sure

Isn't BMW bringing over the 1 series too?

I heard that the 1 series was coming and also that BMW was bringing a diesel to the USA for the 2008 model year.
