R56 Setting Sail on the TITUS
Setting Sail on the TITUS
Hello and welcome! Mine is of the fortunate not-so-few (363, according to maxshrike0) Minis slated to be departing on the TITUS on May 8. Who else is TITUS-bound?
In the admirable WW tradition of naming ships after famous tragedies from Antiquity to the Renaissance and the Elizabethan Era, the fine vessel transporting our Minis has been christened ‘Titus’.
A bit of background: ‘Titus,’ at least in spirit, originated as a Seneca tragedy during the times of Ancient Rome. William Shakespeare appropriated Seneca’s themes and storylines, creating the tragedy of ‘Titus Andronicus,’ first published in 1594 and finally completed in Shakespeare’s Folio edition 29 years later as the version we all know today. The title character is a Roman General who returns to Rome to much fanfare from a prolonged battle.
‘Titus Andronicus’ is one of Shakespeare’s earliest, most narratalogically interesting plays and undoubtedly his bloodiest (I will spare you the details). As befits a tragedy, the ending sees all the primary and many of the secondary characters succumb to a less than enviable fate
.
I suppose it’s nice to know the pedigree of our ship but let’s hope that its fate does not mirror that of its namesake!
Again, happy sailing to all

An interesting experience to track her from England. She had a brief stop on the east coast then a nice trip thru the Caribbean enjoying the sun with her top down (she told me so!!!) and I picked her up on March 16th.
i am like the little kid who has to wait til really late to get picked up from school...the one left standing while the janitor cleans up...
i spoke to my MA and he aid may 20th it would be a good estimate of day to say to be picked up so i am waiting for the big 2-0

Max, your getting more info then I see, are you on the same site? I haven't looked around there much.
Thanks TWON. It appears that I'm loaded on TITUS as of 8 May at 5:01pm. I'll be back in the USA to pick it up in L.A. on 19th June. I expect that it shouldn't take any longer than that to get to L.A.
I get to drive it for 9 days then park it for a year :(

If it really is setting sail a little later then expected, it may need to make up time and move a bit faster as I think they schedule an appointment to go through the Panama Canal at a certain time.
Titus seems to be making about 400 miles per day... Not bad... Due to dock at Port Hueneme 5/28... I think that distance/time works out about right...
I bet she makes Manzanillo (Panama) right on time on the 19th of May...

Titus is really moving now!
She's gone about 945 miles from Southampton since leaving the evening of 5/8...
Seems to be making about 18 miles per hour (standard miles, not nautical) right now... I'll bet she picks up speed, especially if they expect to make Manzanillo Terminal (Panama) on the 19th!

Titus...
Looks like Titus slowed a little bit, probably as she approaches the Azores...
She's about 200 miles out of the Azores now, making about 15.8 statute miles per hour...
She better pick it up in order to make her scheduled call at Manzanillo Terminal by the 19th!

Titus location update...
OK, now she's at the Azores... That's about 1450 miles out of Southampton, which is about 25% of the distance to the Atlantic mouth of the Panama Canal... Not sure how how she'll make about 4,000 more miles by the 19th... (her scheduled call at Manzanillo Terminal)...
Maybe Titus has a sport button?
It is open seas between the Azores and Puerto Rico!

Titus 22mph now...
Hi Nui, I'm pretty sure Google Earth isn't real-time... the Satellite images (or aerial view photographs) are usually up to several years old...
But Titus has picked up speed now, She is moving at about 22 mph after passing the Azores....
Open seas now... and maybe the Captain hit the sport button!?!

Hi Newt...
I'm pretty sure the US Navy wouldn't want such info readily available...
