Wood Steering Wheel Available Now... for a Price

In the course of an exchange with my MA I asked about the respective prices of the wood and leather MFSW's, which originally were listed at the same price on the configurator. Here is his reply:

"I am sorry for the confusion that MINI USA has caused with the steering wheels, but they have gone back and forth with the steering wheel issue for three months now. The price of the Wood multifunction steering wheel is $550 and the Leather multifunction steering wheel is $350.

The reasoning behind this is that the original wood wheel became a safety hazard, so they had to search for another solution. While they did that, MINI USA decided to make the leather three spoke standard, and subsequently ordered far more than originally anticipated. That drove the cost from the supplier down, and they were able to pass along the savings to the consumer. Now that they have found a safe wood steering wheel, they are back to offering it as a premium option."

Because I spec'd the English Oak dash, I'm still planning to get the wood wheel, despite the price difference. Just a decor thing.

Rats - I really wanted the wood wheel too. My mini is at the dealer now - maybe it is not too late?...

I have the leather MFSW. Can it be retrofitted if that is the case?

Yeah, I have the leather and I'd gladly pay the extra $200 (plus labor) for the wood as a trade in deal. But I wouldn't pay another $550 and toss the new leather one away.

I just ordered my MINI and the only interior options I wanted were the oak dash and steering wheel. So far my MA has said that he can't order the oak steering wheel. I sent him the correspondence here (thanks for posting that by the way!) and I hope he can get that sorted out before they get that far into production. I'll post here if he does.

I don't recall whether this specifically relates to the MFSW, but my MA told me that each MINI gets a wiring harness designed specifically for its options. So, adding some electric/electronic options later is impossible. It sounds like they have some automated system that builds the wiring harnesses and only includes the required wires.

So, it could be that one can't go from a standard wheel to a MFSW, but one should be able to upgrade a MFSW leather wheel to a MFSW wood/leather wheel.

Personally, I'd be more interested in the wood wheel if the entire rim were wood, like the classic Nardi wheels. The half leather/half wood rim doesn't really do it for me.

Wooden shift *****, I've got covered.

Yay. I'm getting my wood steering wheel. My MA had said it wasn't available ... and so I sent him the email quoted above and suddenly he found it was. He made the changes and I was finally able to confirm them in my order on the Owner's Lounge. Will have pics as soon as it shows up ........ in 8 or so weeks. :P

MINI said and promised it can be and in only 30 days! The catch is, they won't do it until you get really really frustrated and possibly die first.

If I'm not mistaken, the package price (ZPP) for both options is exactly the same - US$1400.

I emailed my MA about it yesterday. He said the wood MFSW was not available (I didn't tell him about the message above). Guess I should ask him again huh? Anyone get their MA to knock some $$ off the price of their leather one toward a wood one?

My brother had MFSW retrofitted to his R53 MC40. I'd push back on this answer!

(I just was looking at R56s and went round and round with the MA about LSD-he swore it was a standard part of ASC and wasn't an option. 20 minutes later I convinced him that it was an option, it existed, and what it did. I shouldn't have to argue. Then he'd never seen it yet-it had never been on a build sheet to the dealer. First car I look at on the lot, and also the one I drove, both had it. I really would suggest pushing back on answers)

If it helps you any, you can show him this:

My MA was able to switch in the wood wheel a day or two after my initial order. As you can see it shows up as a Sports Wood Steering Wheel. It took a couple days to update on the Owner's Lounge but, as you can see, it finally did. This at Irvine Mini in Irvine, CA.

You should have gotten a sales order indicating sports wood steering wheel. Do you have it?

I had a confirmed order for the wooden one and got the leather and was told that the price is the same so I should be happy.

After raising hell (I really don't like the leather, it feels cheap) I got the retrofit wooden wheel as soon as it becomes available at no cost (which is logical, as I had paid for it in the first place ...)
