so i have been doing film for some time now... im ready and want to make the plunge to digital..... I was thinking the xti and the alpha 100, but my friend after getting his 1d is willing to sell his 20d to me for 750 with a cheapy kit lens.... what do you guys think. let me have it.

 

I'd go for the 20D, then save up for a better lens in the future. The 20 will give more long term options than the Rebel, if you're looking at Canons, I assume you you have Canon lenses for your film camera, which would be fully compatible.

 

Why do you say that? Its 2 year old technology and looks like a crop camera anyway (unless I'm reading it wrong).

 

It was the lens that was cheapy not the body. And when you really look at it what has developed in the past 2 years? The major changes are MP and that has only gone from 8.3 to 10.1. I don't really see cause to spend the extra 150 for less than 2 mega pixels. DSLR technology doesn't eclipse anywhere near as regularly as the P&S. So unless the goal was to make large prints, in the OPs situation I wouldn't have any issue going for a well maintained 20D with more image control made for the pro/serious amerater over a newer cheaper more expensive camera with less features made for a market with fewer demands. But that is just what I would do in the OPs situation

 

it was a well taken cared of camera. its got less than 5k actuactions.

 

I've used both the 20d and the rebel. I own a 20d. For me its a matter of ergonomics and ease of use. Both take wonderful pictures. If you can get a good deal on a 20d then I would highly recommend that camera. I love the layout of the 20d and the size fits my hand much better than the rebel does.

Buy good glass and you'll be happy with the output of either one. I have nothing but L glass. I've invested more in the lenses than the camera but the resale on the glass is great and the difference in picture quality is worth it.
