Another option would be to find someone in your area that has the lens you are looking at, and ask if they would go out on a shoot with you. Then you can try both lenses on your equipemnt.

You could try contacting a local photo club to see if there were people willing to help.

Some good options, but one store I went to in my hometown didn't have the lens in stock and wouldn't order one unless they had a buyer. Another store up in Reno let me fit the lens and take some shot in the store, but they wouldn't let me take it outside the mall (I don't really blame them). Since I mostly do outdoor stuff, it wasn't a good test.

I'm really hoping someone has already done the comparison shots and can just post them on NAM. Besides, there's a good chance the pictures would be of a MINI, which would be a plus.

You're right, the D80 does have a CCD. My mistake. The D2h is CMOS.

yes yes! I got them backwards. Canon makes their own CMOS. My bad ....

Sure, I've seen pictures shot with L and non-L lenses, but they're always of different subjects. Pros swear by the L-series and I'm sure they're right, but I need to have photograpic evidence/proof to convince the wife that spending >$1,000 is going to result in better quality shots. Anyone here have any L and comparable non-L lens pictures to share for comparison purposes? Thanks.
First go here http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html read the review tests of the lens your interested in.

Yes. There are many many comparison of the exact same subject and cropped down to look at the fine detail. The problem is ... you got to find them. Go here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php and get a user id. Then go to the lens forum and start reading. I had found a few.

Beware of the people who are totally clueless and dont realize the optics are best around F5.6/F8/F11, etc. Some people were trying to compare subjects shot at F18

here is one i found. Now to be fair, the 70 - 200L is an absolutely superb lens. I believe this is a cropped part of the bigger picture.

It's LBCAST sensor for the D2h, in house design by Nikon. Slightly diferent from the CMOS though.

It's not a picture of a MINI, but that's the kind of side-by-side comparison I've been looking for. My granddaughters will look ever so much cuter photographed with an L lens. And I should be able to get some spectacular shots in Denali next summer as well.

Thanks, CHOWS4US, for the pics and the site references. Now, where did the wife go?
