Great idea, Steve! Here are my HOs.
1. Art show, no competition. MINI or Mini is the theme, like the NAM monthly contests.
2. If it's a photography show, then photographs -unlimited PP- only. If it's an art show, then all media.
3. Images limited to max of 8x10 - standard size print. Mounting board any color, limited to max of 11x14, standard size mount. No frames.
4. 2 entries per person, ranked 1 and 2. If too many images submitted each person only shows #1, otherwise they all get shown.

Maybe people can bring them on Thursday or Friday by noon, so that helpers can display them by the Friday mixer. A bigger room for that would be good...
cheers,

Dr Phil, that sounds like a pretty good set of rules to me.
1. Art show. MINI/Mini theme. Though the monthly contests still have another theme woven in, like "black & white" or "motion" and I'd still like to get some kind of AMVIV/Vegas relevant imagery incorporated somehow. Still not sure how though.

2. We had talked about it as a photography thing, and other media may be harder to display, so photos with any post processing you want.

3. 8x10s mounted on boards up to 11x14

4. I would rather have too many pics to fit than a sad display of 5 pictures. I'm leaning towards as many as you want, with your name and a preference order number on the back of each one. That way if we work out that we can do 4 pics from each person, we know which 4 you want.

StoopidGirl seems in favour of these, the rest of you?

Sounds fine by me. But, how about you make the print size 8x12.

I guess anything that will fit on an 11x14 board would be ok?

I understand the 8x12 size, as it fits the standard 2:3 ratio of 35mm, and now full-frame digital cameras. I chose 8x10 'coz it's an old standard, and sure, there's no reason to keep the old standards (unless they are Buddy Holly songs). I like the idea of keeping to the standard matte sizes, as these are easily come by, but if you want to cut your own matte for an 8x12, then you can cut the outside dimensions of the matte to any size too, I suppose. So maximum print dimension 12" (other dimension must be smaller), maximum matte size 11x14, any ratio of dimensions OK. How's that?
I like the AMVIV/LV sub-theme, but how are people who don't live in LV going to qualify? If you want to see creativity and expression, limit only to MINI/Mini theme, and see what you get. If it doesn't pan out, then we've always got AMVIV V !! woohoo.
I'm workin' on my prints already...

Rules? We don't need no stinking rules!

I was just wondering, if we aren't having a competition, what is the point of having rules? Maybe people should just be able to bring their MINI and Mini related art and we will display it?

peopla have always for the most part been able to do that like displaying stuff on their cars but if it's a competition you don't want 30 people entering 10 shots each...that'd just be absurd, even if it wasn't a competition you still need to have a limit or have the individual submissions numbered by importance by the dubmitter. But if it's not a competition then I would say, of course no rules on the subject matter...unless it's a themed show...er...hope all that made sense...I'm dehydrated and sunburnt from being at Pomona all weekend..siiiiigh

Thanks, Emily,
We will need some rules, of course, and some advance notice of what is going to be displayed.

In the art/photo shows I been aware of around here at the University, there are two types of shows. One is the juried show, were a panel of judges awards "best of show" type awards for various predetermined catergories. I can see where we would want rules about sizes, etc, for this type of show, so somebody with limited resources wouldn't feel outgunned by someone who displayed large prints with fancy frames, etc.

The other kind of show is just an exhibit, where artists display multiple examples of their work in the same area. There is then a "wine and cheese" type opening affair, where the artists are present and you can talk to them about their work. If we are going to have this kind of show, then I think it would be better to let the artists decide how they want to display their work, within general guidelines. Like each artists gets one or two sheets of 32 x 40 foam core to display on, and we provide the easels to display them?

Steve, I think Emily's idea for displaying will be much easier than trying to come up with a bunch of easels.

I think we are talking about the same thing, its just a matter of whether or not Palace Station will let us hang the foam board on the walls, or if we have to make some kind of free standing holder.

This is more or less a bump for the topic,

But I'm up for bringing some photo to show. I think that a show is a good Idea for this time. But perhaps in the future a competition might be another thing to add to the fun of AMVIV....

I'm going to link this thread to the AMVIV4 Thread so people can find it. There has been some talk of it over there....

as far as size goes 8.5 x 11 is very common ink jet size, but I can do any thing up to 44"x90" so the size really doesn't matter to me at all...

Maybe we can find a common size of foam core that everyone can get locally then that is the Size they have to display... I will check and see what the local Michael's has, they are a pretty common art/craft store...

Wish I could be there with y'all to check out this exhibition but my teenage daughter turns 18 that weekend (on the 24th). That's a milestone year I don't want to miss!

Our current thinking is that we'll supply each entrant a large piece of foamboard (we'll tell you the size after we work it out) that you can fill as you please. If you want to show 1 20x30 or whatever size the board winds up being, fine. If you want to do a couple of 8x10s or 6 5x7s or 15 6x4s, that's up to you.
We'll ask that entrants sort of hang out by their art for 20-30 mins during the mixer so that people can ask them about the techniques/subjects/??? but that wouldn't be enforcable.
Does that seem reasonable?

so I've been reading all this forum....and I don't think I got the answer for a couple of things:
1. No competition right?
2. No theme right?
3. Is there a limit of entries per person?

Brad and I are gonna start printing some out and
I built an album on iphoto with all my mini pictures I took from last year's road trips and I'm bringing that to show off

Can't wait!!!

No competition.
MINI/Mini theme. Maybe a sub-theme too? Road to Vegas? Gambling?
1 piece of foamboard per entrant (not sure of the size yet).

Ok, ok... Jeez! Anyone would think you guys were interested in this or something!
I'm going to hit a couple of places tonight or tomorrow and see what they'll cost for the posterboard.
I'll get back to you by monday.
How many entrants do you think? 5-6? 10? 20?

Hi Agro,

Places like Blick Art Materials carry the foam board. It looks like there are two sizes, 20 X 30 inches and 32 X 40 inches. I'm not sure of the individual costs, but boxes of 25 are $60 for the smaller size and $100 for the larger size on their website.
