Rallycross Action Photos

Went to the rallycross event in Del Mar, CA, 9/23. Got lucky when I decided to use up my final memory card by panning at 1/30 sec as this Mitsubishi Evo slid its way through a turn (taken with Canon 10D with 70-200 f2.8L):

This one (3rd-to-last frame of the day) came out great:

This one (last frame of the day!) isn't technically good at all, but I think it captures the feeling of being there perfectly:

Great photos!

Impressive that you had the car so in focus with that first shot. Were you using a tripod?

Nope, no tripod. I'm a rock! Really I just got lucky. I tracked the car all the way around a curve (about 7 frames) and this one just worked. I spent most of the day just trying to get at least one shot of each car, then experimented with this at the end.

Action shots of rally cars is really difficult (and my camera exacerbates it). Good job!

George Plesik and his Evo 6 are a blast to watch. The bummer with rally photography is the dust wrecking the camera. I did video awhile ago, froze this:

I will have lots more photos in the next week or so. Those were the 2 best so I processed them first. I tried to get one shot of every car that ran, plus some good shots for my own gratification, giving me about 150 shots to process (out of about 750 frames taken).

As for dust in the camera: I wrapped the lens in blue painter's tape to keep it clean, and tried to seal it around the camera body, too (someday I'll be a millionaire with an environmentally sealed Canon 1DS...). Maybe I'll post "before" and "after" shots of my sensor when I clean it.
