MDK: I haven't read that far into the instruction manual, now I have something to zero in on.
Friday night, somewhere else, I look to the west for signs of a sunset, then look east and a full arc rainbow! Shot video first. Will eventually post on YouTube.
I don't like the setting, but couldn't resist the arch.
Sorry, no MINI in the picture(in fact it was taken before I owned a MINI), but it is the only successful lightning picture I have ever taken and was taken with a point-and-shoot digital camera.
I spent about 2hrs that night trying to get a decent picture. The lightning was everywhere, but if I pointed the camera one way, the lightning would appear somewhere else.

The rule is: when you get set up it just stops, or does elsewhere. The moment you stop paying attention is when the BIG ONE happens. Very frustrating.
It was a heck of a lightning show. Lasted about 3 1/2 hrs and was just lightning-no wind, rain or thunder. I've been hoping for another strom like that so I can try again, but haven't had one.
BTW, when did you take the pic on the Cherohala Skyway? We were there early afternoon on Sunday. It looks like you were a short distance in front of or behind us. We have video that looks like your pic-except for the Hot Orange Cabrio.
You using a long shutter or bulb Kurt? I've heard that's the best way to catch lightning-wait for the thunder, open the shutter and close after the flash. I guess try not to soil oneself should be part of the directions as well!
Not to second guess here, but isn't it too late once you've heard the thunder?

We left Fontana, on our way home from MOTD, about 1100 Sunday and hit the Cherohala right around noon
What frustrates me about the original pic is, I left the drivers door open like an idiot and everytime I look at that pic I can't help but think it'd look better if I'd have just closed the danged door

You were probably between 1-2 hrs ahead of us. Our aggravation was due to something else. We had tried to get pics of Gromit under the sign at each of the pulloffs and did a pretty good job until we got to the highest point (Santeetlah). We pull off to get the picture and there was a carload of people who had parked their "classic" Chevy battleship with three fenders, more rust than paint, mismatched wheels, window unit air conditioner(okay, maybe not that bad) sideways under the sign. There was no way to get a picture without that rolling junkyard in it. Out of all the pics, that's the one we wanted the most and couldn't get it.
Holy Crap!! Looking at this post makes me Remember that I totally Suck at taking pictures. I just bought a Nikon D40 though so I will be working on my shooting skills! 89Kurt, do rainbows just follow you around or what?
