Need advice - unprotected (legal) DVD transcoding & editing
Hey all,
I'm hoping to glean some good advice from those of you out there with lots of video editing experience.
As some of you may have read in my old thread back in May (Dragon: Honda S2000 with camera...), I have DVD footage taken from the Dragon of me on a "spirited" drive.
I would like to transcode (correct terminology?) this to the PC so that I can upload it to friends, post it here, etc. What tools would you all recommend for this? Additionally, if possible I would like to add some basic elements, like a text intro, and a freeze-frame finish with overlay graphics and additional sound effects. I am also concerned about achieving the best quality that is reasonably possible, since I hate blurry video.
The problem is, I have no idea where to start. I don't know what software tools are out there to assist me in this, and which of those would suit me best, especially considering I'm a novice at this. For what it's worth, I am a very experienced computer guy (I'm actually a network engineer, so it's my bread and butter), but just no video editing experience.
Also, I'm a PC user, not a Mac user... although I had contemplated picking up a Mac Mini just for kicks (finally a headless Mac that is cheaper than the G5!).
Please advise. At this stage, it's only for this one project, but if the experience is postive I might be inspired to do other things with it in the future. I do own quite powerful PC hardware, so hardware specs are not likely the issue.
Note: If necessary, the original filmer has also offered to send me the MiniDV tape of it, but I don't own any MiniDV hardware, so I doubt it would be much use.

Easiest way
Easiest way to do what you described:
1. Get the MiniDv tape and camcorder from your friend.
2. Use Microsoft Windows Movie Maker (already in Windows XP) to "Capture" the footage. Capture the footage as an .AVI or MPEG2 file.
3. You can now email, post, burn this file as needed. AVI provides best quality but biggest file size. MPEG2 will be smaller file and still have decent quality.
Good luck.
