Photography Forum Calendar Submissions

Looking over the calendar submissions so far I'm just noticing that some of the regulars in the photography discussions haven't contributed anything yet.

I'm in that group myself. I am planning on entering, but one photo still needs a little editing and I'm also planning a photoshoot specifically to take pictures for the calendar.

Just curious why some of you haven't entered the contest, because there have been a lot of good photos shared in this forum.

Is there anything besides just needing to get the time to do it holding anyone back?

Dave

I'm planning on entering as well. I just haven't quite gotten out of the house or had the creative urge to take that award winning picture!

Well, I'm not going to name names for fear of leaving anyone out, but let's just say there are winners from last year that haven't made submissions to the contest yet. Some of those people have participated in the photo/video forum, and there are some others that I'm thinking of as well.

Dave, Can my 3.3 MP digi make big enough images? I figured it's a wienie, so I haven't considered entering! LOL!

4 megapixel (2272 by 1704) is the minimum acceptable size.

Sorry Clover.

Clover, it took me a year and a good excuse to get a new 4MP digital camera! Last year I was only able to enter pix for the Car Care website since my camera was only 3.3MP also! Just cause you don't own a camera doesn't mean you can't borrow one! LOL

 Great (Libra) minds think alike: DiD offered to lend me his 4 MP camera! I'm thinking about taking him up on his offer...

Our NAM pals are the best!

Agreed!!! (about NAM Pals and Libras!)

Btw, you should take him up on that offer. It'll be the same camera I got, and while it's no Nikon D70, it'll still take great pix with a bit of effort!

I'm not what you would call a regular. I do have a pic that I would like to send in but have trouble with sizing. It is a digital pic taken from my D-70. It was taken in the jpeg (sp?) large format. MINIClo posted the minium size earlier. Can you post the size range that is acceptable.

Also thanks everyone for posting pics and "how I did it" here. I've learned a bunch here.

John,

2272 by 1708 is the minimum size. The gallery is set-up to accept pictures up to 3500 by 3500, which would be 10+ MP, so almost no one on here should have image size problems on the high end (unless you're shooting medium format with a digital back. wouldn't that be nice.).

As for file size, the Maximum File Size for contest submittal is 6 MB per picture.

With jpeg FINE on your D70 you should be no larger than about 3 MB, so just go ahead and upload the picture.

Yeah, the Nikon 4300 will take some great shots, but you're right, in order to get there a contrast/brightness adjustment is needed at a minimum.

Should I ask the really silly question?? Are real photographs not eligible? I too have a wienie camera, but I've been a photographer (love velva & scala) for a long time... I have non-digital good equipment, but not good digital... Help?

We need digital format for the calendar. You could always flatbed scan or do negative scans to submit photos shot on film. Just remember the same resoution applies (2272x1704 or bigger).

I know that a negative scanner is pricey... too pricey for me. That being said, I have an old scanner. I think it's a 1200. Any idea what kind of scanner I'd need to get to get images in the correct quality or better?

I'm sure Kinkos or a decent camera shop could do some good high quality scans for you.

Why not just ask your local Costco or film developer to put your pics on a CD? Most places do that for very little extra charge, and the results will be decent since they are scanned from the negs.

I happen to know that at least two photographs on the 2004 calendar (the cover being one of them) were shot on print film with an old Nikon FE. The film was then taken to a Ritz Camera store for processing and scan/burn onto CD.

Nowadays, even chain pharmacies like Sav-On and Rite Aid offer 1-hour processing for Photo CD's.

Any good camera shop will offer neg scanning services for already-processed film.

BTW: Digital cameras produce "real photographs" also. (but that's a whole other discussion . . . )
