MINI in Motion (updated 2/14)
DiD,very nice work. Looks fantastic. I am ready to start shooting some night motion. I think that I am going to be able to get out this weekend and start. I want to try and few different things... different rigs and such. I will post any photos that are worth posting. I am sure it will take many nights to have anything worth the salt of DiD's beautiful shots. Thanks again.
I'll be interested to see what you come up with.
I really need to get my D70 back.
I have a couplt of experiments I'd like to do and I need the versatility that the D70 offers compared to my 4300.

Obviously I'm not a camera buff or I'd know this already.
I see in the how-to that you mount the camera to the car via suction cups and a tripod of sorts. Photos 1 & 2, you can't see the whole car which is what I expected with the mounting technique. However for Photos 3-10, I don't see any of the "rigging". So either it was digitally removed, or some photo technique allowed the "rigging" to become invisible. Or maybe you didn't use the rigging and just hand held the camera. Can you explain?

eshaun - beautiful shots! really, and those porsches are fantastic! do you have any more of the black one?
i have that same canon non-slr (well, the s45)...yes! very versatile camera - click my sig to see my pics with it. i love what you've done with your pics. unique in their own way, just as dave's motion shots are. just a joy to look at. both of you keep them coming!

DiD, I think I can understand how you've got this rigged. Either
A.) you've got a huge 10-15 ft arm (you've already mentioned 10 ft off the car
) that extends from the OTHER side of the car not in sight, and comes up over the car out of the shot (which would be highly volatile camera movement, so you must have an expensive "arm"!)
or
B.) you have some sort of clear fishing line hooked to the car, that pulls the camera on an isolated free-standing tripod 10 ft away in the exact movement of the car. Still highly difficult to move smoothly and accurately with the car.
Or
C.) You're telekenetic.

My only thought about the motion shots (where the whole mini is seen in the frame) is that something moving in the same speed/direction as the mini was used at the camera mount. Those photos don't look like anything was Photoshoped out.
I am waiting for the snow to fall more reliably around here. I have a great idea for a daytime static shot of my mini after a fresh snow fall. Now if mother nature would just cooperate.

jsouz:
Too bad for you I just found out today my D70 is ready to be picked up. I'm going by tomorrow to get it.
styling99 and Driving_Hamster: Some interesting ideas about ways to do this. I'm still sticking to my no additional comment policy though.
Of course, I could be doing product testing of a new image stabilization system for Nikon called (VR)^2

Well, I can't have everything
I should say to the group that it was Did and his posts and pics that initially got my attention going to new camera gear. The repeated comments about ease of use of the D70 spoke my language. I have found it just that way. In fact, both my son and wife - neither of whom find warmth with camera equipment - have found the D70 easy to uncap, point and shoot. Naturally, this is very very amateur stuff but it is a start.
Thanks again for the suggestion, the encouragement and the direction. This camera thing has taken much of my attention away from - egads - the MINI itself.
JPS
I too will someday post an interesting shot......

I'll include my comments/observations, and of course don't expect DID to confirm or deny them.
I've noticed every picture comes off the wheel wells. If it was coming from a body panel such as a suction cup mount, the closest part of the car would be somewhere else, or at least change.
I think it is somehow bolted to one of the strut towers, or inside the hood, maybe the top of the suspension in the rear. Then extends DOWN near the road surface...the pavement is already motion blurred making it very easy to photoshop the rigging out, where this wouldn't be nearly as possible with the body panels & reflections.
It doesn't matter the technique. What's important are the shots are spectacular, and DID gets the credit for doing it first.

But you certainly are getting the camera out VERY far away from the car, the angle doesn't seem all that wide. I'm amazed how stable things are at that length.
It looks like you took a static photo, used a photoshop blur filter to get the background and foreground "blur". The filter was applied in to create a horizontal blur, but the car would actually be travelling at an angle to the direction of the blur.
Then the wheel from the shot your friend took, while driving along side, was cut and pasted in. The square corners from the wheel photoshop are still visible (lower left corner and upper right corner).
Personally, I like the picture your friend took the best out of the three, although I would crop it a bit to get the mirror out of the picture.

No the first pic is a true "in motion" pic with no photoshop other than grayscale.
My other two were attempts to reach your standard by way of cheating (or not
)
Still loving your pics DiD
You have got me and i guess others wanting to recreate your style of pics.

Scooby,
So what are the sharp corners to the lower left and upper right of the front wheel? Did you adjust the contrast of the wheel in that area with a rectangular lasso tool? Those sharp corners were the marks that had me thinking the whole thing was photoshopped.
Edited: to avoid further confusion
