Mount - 9.95

Honestly now I can't find it and I already threw away the paperwork. I'll have to wait for the Visa statement. :-)

What size lens?

I'm going to buy a bullet camera off ebay. I'm wondering what lens size is best for a mix of interior and exterior shots? I was thinking 3.6mm, or maybe 6mm. Is 6mm too much zoom for exterior shots that capture part of the car, the road, and the scenery?

I have a cam from Viosport and I get a decent shot of the bonnet and road when I have it mounted on the sunvisor. Here are the specs from the website...

What are the specs on the Adventure Cam II?

They also offer a wide angle lens that has a 105 degree of vision with a 2.5mm lens. (I've been meaning to pick that up and give it a try)

Hope that was some sort of help for you!

Hey Eric, good luck on that mount. I checked it out, and its being sold to hold an LCD monitor. Hope there is enough adjustment and its sturdy enough for the camera. The biggest potential problem I see is flex, which might transmit vibrations to your picture.

As for uploading movies, these days its not necessary to host your videos on a true streaming server since formats like QT and WM both support the ability to playback while downloading.

I personally don't think you should bother with RM since most people use either QT or WM over here on NAM.

So just upload your movies to your webhost, and give out the URL to that file.

Probably best to shoot for a file size less than 10MB. Encode for around 512kb or higher if you dare. The resulting quality will be inferior to the original source but you just need to accept that. =)

Good luck

Richard

Here is an easy way. Upload a picture to your website. Right click on the picture, if you are on a PC, or on Mac, not sure the equivalent, but find out the Properties or URL of that picture.

It'll be something like http://www.mydomain.com/stuff/picture.jpg

So for people to watch your movie, it'll just be

http://www.mydomain.com/stuff/movie.mov

replacing the name of the picture.jpg with the name of the movie (movie.mov)

Since you're using SBC webspace, you might want to check how much they give you. My ISP didn't give me much at all.

The suction cup i got from Harbor Freight in the link which is in the first post of this thread.

That tripod head isn't an Slix its a Manfrotto i used to use in my SVT Focus's headrest mount. I'm still waiting to buy the Slix for multiple camera shooting.

Hey Everybody!

Just had a great Autocross this past Sunday and got some extensve testing of my newest toy thanks to NAM! Here are some pics of how i put mine together:

I'll have some very nice video's up soon! As you can see it rode along with a national champion driver in his WRX Sti on an FTD run. Also rode along with some other awesome cars!

Also Octane Guy is this the mount that you are using for the VacuCams?

Do those handles stay pretty still? Would attaching a camera like the one above stay in place? The two suction cup deal is nice but on curvy cars i can't get it to stick and the one suction cup seems like it would work well.

Video's to come soon!

Great job! That suction you posted looks very similar to mine, but the color is kinda funky so I would assume it's not the same. As far as I know, the ones I use only come in bright safety orange.

Regardless, if it's got atleast a 90 pound capacity it *should* work, but then again, the cams I use are very lightweight. This past weekend I did a setup where I attached some Angle between two mounts for interior shots. It worked very well, but the handles did flex a bit during installation, so my thinking is that a heavier camera might do the same.

Lets see the videos!

Octane another great setup! That looks very kool!

You autocross correct? Do you get as many strange looks as i did this past weekend? I almost got pulled off the line for my first run because one of the safety stewards freaked out that i had something attached to the outside of the car! When i showed him it could easily pull off the window if i tugged enough he let it go.

The video's should be up soon hopefully. Its not completely up to me so i have to wait for the site webmaster to put them on the right server. I can't wait to share the vids, as they are incredibly exciting!

Only issue i'm working on now is getting a good working baffle for wind noise on these little camera microphones.

Thanks! I'll be posting details in the MINI Camera and Video forum soon!

re: Autocross
No, I currently don't, but I do get strange looks all the time.

re: easily pull off the window?
I think you meant, COULDN'T easily pull???

re: Audio
It's a tough issue. The way I solve it is to run an external mic into my engine bay. Because the VacuCams are mono, I record the ambient wind noise on the Left channel of my Stereo camcorder, and the external engine mic on the Right channel. Easy to do with some audio splitters. Harder to do with a camcorder though. LOL

Then when I edit the video, I have 2 distinct channels of audio--I can use the portion of the ambient wind noise--like an announcer talking or other usable sounds, and mix it in with the engine noise.

However the engine emits some pretty funky noises with belts, and things going on that sound very UNMINI like--so you can't use it 100%.

DO NOT USE A SETUP LIKE THIS!!! Its too rigid and if your car torques you will lose a window!!!

Interesting thought. I never really thought of that. Maybe I should put a disclaimer on the type of driving that can be used with this setup. I drove 260 miles from 8AM until 5PM with this setup without any problems, but then again, the type of driving was straightline---freeway, local streets. I wasn't doing any AutoX.

I'm not sure if a little torque would cause a window to be lost though. I find the mounts don't stick nearly as well to glass as they do to painted metal. I'll do some more research and for now, put up a notice do this at their own risk.

Thanks for your comment.

Richard,

I definately wouldn't "test" my theory out. I imagione a good torque and it might pop the window. How much give is in the suction cups? I would have a disclaimer anyway for any damage to someones car/camera anyway.

I love the other setups though.

Again, I'm willing to continue to use my car as a test bed and take that risk. I still feel it depends on the type of driving you are doing to create that type of torque. I can imagine doing AutoX would probably create those kind of forces.

There is some give in both the suction cups and in the handles. You push hard enough in either direction, and the handles will give way first before the suction will break lose. I tried that in my early tests where I was mounting a heavier bar, and I torqued the Angle, causing a loud SNAP in the mount.

But your point is well taken. What do you think about mounting a rubber dampener on the Angle itself instead of a rigid connection as it is now. This would allow flex/movement by maybe 1/4" to 1/2" on either side.

The position this mount gives is really ideal from a forward/backward perspective. I'd really like to find a way to make this work, without causing any undue risks.

Thanks for the feedback!

I think that would work, something that take up that of pressure and might even take up some vibration.

Hey MSFitoy,

The tripod head is a Manfrotto 3229 that i used to use in my SVT Focus for a modified headrest here:

The Manfrotto head cost about $30 and has a quick mount removal that you can see in the SVT pics.

Here are also some of the video's i took with that mount:

http://www.riedelvideo.com/regner/0210_joes_vids.shtml

I want to get some of those SBH-100 tripod heads if i can get them cheap, but if not i'll just buy more of the Manfrotto's for future mounts.
