GAS OCTANE
Mini dealer recommended I used 91 octane gas or higher. I've been using Amoco Regular 87 with no change in aceleration or engine knocking. There is a big difference in price between regular and premium. My Mini is not the S model. Is possible that the super charge engine of the S model requires the high octane gas.

There are literally dozens of threads on this topic on MCO. For one that was active as late as this morning, see here.
Use the [search] function that's at the upper righthand corner of each thread to execute a search.
The bottom line is that your MINI (Cooper or S) needs 91 octane to provide good performance and (perhaps most importantly to you) optimal gas mileage. Running regular gas won't hurt your car if you do it infrequently, but as a matter of course, it will. Your computer is making up for it now, but still isn't able to give you the performance and mileage you'll get on Premium.
The loss of gas mileage caused by 87 octane gas will offset the 10 - 15 cents you save per gallon buying the cheaper stuff.
