Attention Akron/Canton, OH MINI Owners
Attention Akron/Canton, OH MINI Owners
Not to step on any toes or upset the apple cart, but I've been considering starting an Akron/Canton MINI club. Not because I'm unhappy with NEO MINI (The Pub gathering was fantastic!), but because I think a club centered around the Akron/Canton area might be a good idea. We could focus more on things closer to home. Between gas prices and time, I know that I can't possibly make it to every meet in Cleveland or Columbus.
So what does anyone think: anyone interested in starting an Akron/Canton club?

If she's around the OSU campus, Ohio is beautiful... tell her to get out into rural Ohio... or Cleveland (34% poverty rate- highest in the nation)... haha
No, it's not so bad. I was just in Kentucky- and THAT made me miss Ohio!

Insofar as getting a Massillon/Perry/Tuslaw/Jackson, etc., club going, maybe you should suggest it in the NEO section, or the Burning River or Mid Ohio sections. Lotsa people post there who are from those areas. This Midwest section is mostly for the midwestern part of the USA. Just a suggestion....

This where a lot of the central Ohio people seem to hang around.
On Saturday morning July 19th @ 8:30 or so there is a get together of MINI folks at Tim Horton's in New Albany. Always lots of car & friendly people.

Having too many clubs in one area simply adds confusion. Mini NEO has been around since 2002, and is a free club, encompassing all of Northeastern Ohio. We have dealership support, and connections across the country with other clubs, as well as good relationships with vendors - Detroit Tuned does one or two mod parties a year for us. Members range from Massilon, Alliance, Painesville, Mentor, Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Sheffield, etc. Meetings are not mandatory, and any club member is free to arrange any event that they wish, they are not limited to location.

President: Dana Ray (aka minigal)
VP: Tom Salisbury (aka mini-n-vy)
Thanks!
Edit: Mini NEO does not use our section on NAM, since we have our own boards, just as an FYI - we don't check the NAM ones often.

I can understand your wish to have something closer to home. We went to Columbus and found that with gas and getting up at 6 am to make the meetings was a little tough for us. We decided to start a club in Mayfield, OH. (still an drive for us) and it has been well received. Not that we want to lose people from BRM, there are a couple of people from your area that showed up. If you want to talk to them come to the August 9th meeting and talk to them and see if any of them are interested, not all of them use NAM.
I see you joined us at Mini NEO, 22CooperS! Awesome! Keep an eye on our upcoming events section, we have a few things already lined up - a number of us are doing MINI takes the states at the end of the month, plus an upcoming mod party in Canton.
We saw him canvassing MTOD08. Those poor mini owners from Arizona and Canada and where-ever he could put a flyer, they must have thought he escaped from somewhere...WE LOVE YOU GREG!!!
After having joined MINI NEO, I'll probably just stick to that club... I was totally confused as to why I never saw events for MINI NEO on NAM- then I realized that I had to be a member of NEO's forum... now that I am, there's tons to do and it works with my work schedule!
If there really are any people who were blown away by the idea, let me know- maybe we could just have a MINI NEO: Akron/Canton Chapter for those of us in the more southern region of NEO. haha I'd still like to at least have a group of owners from this area get together- whether it's a formal club or not.

Congrats on finding a club
My two cents
22CooperS. I've seen your posts on these boards and appreciate your desire to participate on line as well as on the road. Our cars are a great passion for us and it always puzzles me how anyone can view a Mini as just "transportation" and not a "hobby".
I'm glad you decided to affiliate yourself with a club. The NEO folks are great people and my first club. Since there are no fees or dues I also am a member of Burning River Minis as well as and Pittstop Minis too (in Pittsburgh which is $35 annually). Soon I will join Mid-Ohio. I find that this is a great way to meet more like minded people and have more options for activities. I know that each club welcomes members of any other club.
If you ever decide to start a new club in Akron you can count on me to join and make as many functions as possible. I know that "MINI" people are only interested is the joy of ownership and driving and are above "competing" with each other.
Thanks to Kimoz for the kind words regarding the PUB event. The PUB (5/18/08 and 11/11/07, AND 6/6/09, mark your calender) event was/is an independently conceived, promoted, and funded event. It had no affiliation in paticular with any specific club nor will it in the future. It was a celebration of Minis and the people who drive them as well as people who love them (non owners welcome). We had people from not only Ohio clubs but Michigan, PA, Indy, and KY. It is also an opportunity raise money through raffle ticket and t-shirt sales for charity (Providence House). This event will always be FREE!
All clubs will be welcome and encouraged to proudly display shirts, banners, stickers, or literature every year. I look forward to meeting you 6/6/09 or hopefully sooner. Have fun and motor on!!!

Thanks, Mowse. I'm glad you see that I'm not "competing"... and I think others feel the same way. As I said, unless I can get a REALLY strong response, I probably won't do anything... but spread the word- maybe we could get something going!
