Mt. Diablo Run Feeler
Mt. Diablo Run Feeler
OCTOBER 22 (SAT): How about a run to Mt. Diablo??? I've never been up
there, but according to Steve S it's a real fun run. Steve, would you
be willing to coordinate this run? Email me and let me know.

Its absolutely a beautiful trip about 30 minutes from Pleasanton-Danville area. Make your trip in early November and maybe REME can meet you there with a picnic lunch afterwards. I am still planning our November 5th run.... could be there as well as anywhere else.
Actually the best road to the top is via the NorthGate (Walnut Creek).

I'd be happy to coordinate/plan.
What I'm thinking is a backroad trip to Walnut Creek/Mt. Diablo, via 33 through central Cal (boring, I know), up through the windmills through Byron (slightly more exciting, but not much), head for Marsh Creek Road and the back side of the mountains through Clayton (a lot of fun -- have never done it in a MINI, but my RX7 and I used to have a GREAT time, again and again -- 15 or 20 miles of slightly challenging 45-80 mph road with a few twisties thrown in for added fun), down Ygnacio Valley Road and through the Northgate entrance to Mt. Diablo. It'll take about 3 hours (from Madera) to the base of Mt. Diablo assuming a couple of quick stops to wait for some of you slow-pokes.
In a slow car (4.0 Jeep Cherokee) with traffic it takes about 1/2 hour from the entrance of Mt. Diablo ($5-10 entrance for a State park?) to the peak on a very mountainous, curvy, exciting and fun road. At the summit you can see, like, San Diego on a clear day -- or at least Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco and the 7 Bay Area bridges. Yes, a pretty amazing view. Bring your good camera and binoculars, all. Assuming hell doesn't freeze over, we're gunna hit some traffic on the way up so count on at least a 25 minute drive to the summit.
This is all totally unplanned at this moment and your suggestions are more than welcome, if not required. Maybe we should take the freeway to Tracy, then follow the route through the windmills -- it'll save about 30 minutes. Maybe the Black Diamond entrance to the mountain is now open and that'd be fun on the way up -- that'd save 20 minutes and should still be a whole lotta fun. Maybe we should eat breakfast first or on the way. May be we should... I dunno, what?!
The route and time guesstimates are just those and I can't be held to them. I'm writing at the spur of the moment with no research whatsoever... The drive back is also full of options, but I generally find that the best way home is the way we're going -- just put her in reverse. You will save a few minutes, depending on where we eat, if you want to take the freeway, but you lose a lot more than that in your loving-life quotient.
There are a ton of very good places to eat in the Walnut Creek, Concord, Danville, Lafayette, San Ramon, Danville, Pleasanton (etc.) area, which are all easily within driving distance on the way down/home -- I'll check into getting a nice lunch catered to the top of the mountain and waiting for our arrival (?) -- I'm thinking a little bit of beer (long drive home) and some sort of side dish.
Any favorite restaurants will be considered -- let me know! There are picnic areas that can be reserved near the top...
Please let me know asap: your availability -- certainly any dates that are out; your preferences for route -- if you're familiar with the area especially; food, leaving time, whatever! Post to this site or send any private thoughts to maderasams@yahoo.com I will listen to responses for the next week or so, and by 10/1 I'll attempt to put together an itenerary based on your feedback and my thoughts/findings and truly hope that y'all want to come.
I am coming up on 5 straight weekends off, so the date is really wide open.
Much more soon.

I was talking about different things other members are involved with such as what Brad was doing with the SoCal event. I know the BBQ was on the site and we had it planned, but out of town unexpected family showed up. A simple post with either links or an email would be great!
The Mt. Diablo run sounds good, but keep in mind some of our members maybe worn out with a 3+ hour ride just to get there, so a quick route there maybe better, and an alternative route home through the above stated route may work good, that way we all get there together but can have a choice to leave with a group going straight this way, or taking a long route

Yes, I stole some of your photos. I am having trouble getting our members to take pictures; they're too busy having fun at the meets. Juan and I took a lot of pictures at the BBQ, but I am still using my Nikon F2 so I have to get them developed and scan them. Mt. Diablo should be good for photo taking so I should be able to get more for the non-existant "gallery" on the website.

What is wrong with Electric Blue Mini's?
I would have posted the Cruising for a Cure event, but I didn't decide for sure I was going until Friday night. I left my house at 2:30am Sat. and got home at 8pm that night.
Trying to get people to join SoCal Mini Maniacs so you can do more of there events. They have a Laughlin run in November, but you need to be a member to go.11th-13th.
I don't know anything about Mt. Diablo, but we should meet at Starbucks in Madera, 99 and ave. 16.
Myself I would prefer the back roads.

Thx for the replies -- keep them coming.
I am leaning towards 10/22, and certainly agree with meeting at Starbux in Madera -- right off Highway on 99 at Ave 16, right beside Home Depot and Holiday Inn Express.
Any other thoughts on the date??? Thx,

Yeah, just like Yosemite. Your tax dollars going towards traffic law enforcement instead of park services. They'll get you for license plate lamps being out in Yosemite. Lights, sirens and everything. Two different friends got that one.

How about a short write-up on your excursion for the website?Steve
The event sounds great and would love to join in, but the 22nd is out for me. Prior commitment with an all day Ski Patrol meeting at Dodge Ridge Ski Resort. Any other time would be best......but I'm only 1 of many, so what ever the group decides. Like Scooby3, I would prefer the back roads also. but then I'm only an hour+ from Walnut Creek via freeway.:impatient
