A possible premonition about the END OF THE MID-OHIO MOTORING CLUB.

Last night I had an interesting dream about me and some of you guys. If you are bored and have time, spend a couple minutes and read it.

***

The Mid-Ohio Motoring Club was on a large weekend trip taking a long drive that followed alongside the east coast (I have a feeling it was somewhere near North Carolina) We had reservations to stay at a large horse-shoe shaped resort on the Atlantic Ocean with the open end of the U facing the water.

There were approximately 10 Minis in our caravan driving to the resort. I vividly recall driving my Mini on a twisty road following alongside the ocean at sunset and following directly behind Chuck, then Jeff (welshmenwillnotyield), Alan (rigidjunkie), and a couple other MINIs were in the lead. Brian (B.A.D.), Paul and Sue, John (jw34), Kim, Carol, and few others Minis were behind me.

It was sunset as we were ending our drive and getting close to the resort. The skies were a deep red-orange with some extremely dense dark storm clouds over the ocean. There were a few harsh wind gusts and it was quite chilly out. I remember thinking to myself that I hoped we hurried up and got to our resort before it started raining because I have almost bald tires and I didn't want my car to get dirty.

I don't recall too many details between the end of the drive and checking in to the resort, but the next major chapter of the dream begins with us all eating dinner in an upstairs lounge at night.

It was pretty late at night and we had all just finished eating. I'm guessing the resort that we were staying in was about 10 stories tall and we were all relaxing and talking in a dimly lit lounge outside the restaurant on the 4th or 5th floor. There were tall glass windows facing the sea and most of us were sitting on large cushiony couches and a few people were walking around talking drinking coffee or tea.

I remember John walking around nibbling on a a cupcake talking on his cell phone while looking out the windows at the sea. The moon must have been almost full because you could see the sea and white crests of the waves quite well. Brian was sitting down with his son in his lap and wife next to him (however, in reality I forget what their faces look like). I recall Kim, Paul and Sue, and Carol sitting at a table cheerfully talking and laughing with someone that I didn't know that possibly worked at the resort.

I was by myself on the trip and sitting on a couch with a coffee table with Chuck, Alan, and Jeff. We had been talking about the drive to the resort and where we planned to go the following day. Jeff mentioned that we should get a grill badge for going on this trip and Chuck made a joke saying something like we don't have enough room on our cars for all the grill badges that you have ideas for.

There was a loud crash of thunder that immediately made everyone stop talking and look at each other with awkward faces, then everyone went back to their conversation.

Chuck slowly stood up with his digital SLR wrapped around his neck and gestured for me to come with him as he headed for the window to look at the sky. I was moderately bored and wanted to see how bad the upcoming storm looked.

As we were staring out of the window at the moonlit sea, Chuck said to me "Whatever we do tomorrow, I sure hope Jeff is behind us, because he drives too slow....blah blah blah" I recall myself almost laughing while I was rolling my eyes.

There wasn't too much rain falling from the sky, but the ocean was still very turbulent. There were also strong gusts of wind that made the entire building shutter every few seconds.

Chuck and I sat back down and began talking to Alan, Jeff, and a third random person who I assume was a MINI owner.

A few seconds later John started shouting for us to come near the windows and check out some large waves. Several of us got up and stared out the window. The waves weren't that tall, but were coming up pretty close to the resort. I looked in the distance and saw a large wave that appeared to be 20 feet tall about 1/4 mile away. For about 20 seconds I slowly watched in agony as it got closer and closer to the resort.

As the two story tall wave neared, I kept waiting for it to crest. It never did. The wave was travelling probably 50 mph and was essentially a never ending wall of water.

The wave hit the hotel with such force that after a few seconds the foundation started to give away. The floor was shaking violently. I began to crawl on the floor to get away from the windows. The power flickered then went out as the walls and ceiling collapsed in on everyone. I then felt a free falling sensation and knew I was killed. I don't know if you guys were also killed, but I would be quite surprised if you survived the fall and collapse of the building ...

It's almost even worse knowing/assuming all of our Mini's got totaled in the wave also .

**Then I woke up**

Moral of the story:
If the opportunity ever arises for us to go on a east coast ocean-side drive and stay at an ocean-side resort, please turn down the offer.

Mark (CHKMINI), Barbara, Matt, Yuriy, Aaron, and everyone else in the club; consider yourselves lucky, because you weren't in the dream .

Wow Cooper that's pretty wild! There's probably a lot of potential Freudian analysis to be applied there.
But I think the real moral of the story is not to eat the pizza with peppers and anchovies right before you go to bed.

Actually, you are mistaken....I survived this tragic circumstance. The person you thought was me was, in fact, not me at all, but someone who looked like me [yes, I know that that, in itself, seems impossible, but, we are ALL supposed to have a double out there somewhere]. Due to my slow driving [haste makes waste, ya know...], I never caught up with the other 9 cars, and was just entering the grounds of the resort when I saw the impending doom approaching, turned around frantically, and just made it to higher ground as the waters swirled by. Now, I am awaiting my "I survived the US Tsunami" grille badge.

At least you wouldn't have to worry about catching up to him like us on the "de-carbonizing" team!

Hey Chuck... hope you're feeling better. Hearing you talk like an asthmatic Miss Piggy was just... wrong.

Don't worry...Jeff will not be participating on any more drives, as he doesn't want to slow anyone down anymore.

Nope...I'm "out". I'll "blow out the carbon" at the track, but I will NOT do so on a public highway, much less in Amish country, where pedestrians walk along the roadway, and Amish buggies wobble slowly up and down hills on narrow roads. Call me slow if ya want, but I'd rather be slow, ticket-free, and often-lost, than someone who just doesn't "get it"...that tracks and road courses are for those who want to speed...AND, they NEVER need to worry about getting lost. Besides, my wife usually travels with me on these "drives", and I value HER safety a helluva lot more than rousing games of "chicken" and "road tag". You guys can go ahead and do as you wish, but leave me out of it.

Hmmm...

Perhaps the portion of the drive after Smuckerland was different than earlier in the day (I went home after that stop), but the early part of the drive didn't feel to me like you describe at all, Jeff.

I'm not sure what you mean by "chicken" or "road tag", but I only saw Chuck (who was leading) pass like 3 times, all past vehicles that were going very slow. I know I could have driven a *lot* faster than I was, but I had Grayson and Amy in the car with me.

I guess I could do the "internet forum thing" and get pissy, choosing to interpret your words as calling into question MY priorities, but I'm not going to. I know I was driving safe and well within my capabilities, and I know that if anyting had come into my path - buggy, deer, child, what have you, that I could have stopped safely. As someone who has a MINI crash in my history - not a theoretical crash but an actual one you understand - I know what you mean about driving within one's capabilities and within the current conditions of the road, and in my opinion (for whatever it's worth), Chuck did a fine job not only choosing the route but trailblazing in a safe, but spirited, manner.

That said... you're more than welcome to join ME in the rear any time I take Fiona on a drive. I guarantee you there's no way I'll be leaving ANYONE in the dust in a car that only makes 45 horsepower. We would have driven her last Saturday, in fact, but we were still a bit iffy from stomach flu and wanted a car that was less "bouncy", not because we were worried about "keeping up".

It's just teasing, Jeff. You might have noticed tha this crowd tends to be a bit immature that way (and I very much include myself in that categorization). It's all in good fun.

I apologize Jeff, I really was just joking with you and really did not mean to offend you. I do agree with Matt that our time in Amish country was well under control and safe.

I have been somewhat regretting the last portion of the drive on Saturday since I had Lil' B.A.D. in the car. To be honest with you, I kind of forgot that he was back there since he had falling asleep.

I don't think any of the driving after Smuckerland was overtly dangerous. Any spirited driving was well under control and if you knew my wife and her aversion to any sort of adolescent activity in cars, you'd know what I mean. Chicken and road tag were not part of the drive.

WOW now I want to know what I missed on the drive home!

Each person has a comfort zone I felt like we were holding back a good bit on this particular drive because I had the wife and kid in the car and never felt like we were racing along. Chuck only made one pass that I questioned, but that is probably more due to my lower power car not to any safety issues.

Personally I hope You come out with us again Jeff because I for one enjoy your company (I would not follow you only due to my fear of your navagation abilities not your pace).

See ya at Tim's sometime...that's MY drive.

I just figured you got stuck behind someone at a turn or stop sign... That's happened to me before (shrug).

As for all having fun... *I* have the most fun in the group, when all the MINIs/Minis are in a line. Driving around is fun,but doing it in a pod of like cars is what adds to that fun. Sounds like you disagree... that's cool.

Obviously splitting off and doing the route on your own is 100% equally valid - that's why Chuck printed out copies of the route with painstaking detail of all the turns for every car. He also put into the packet that the run was NOT a race or speed event. "Following the leader" was not mandatory or even implied. Going off on your own was totally valid - I know I did after Smuckerland, after all...

Back on topic... Top Gear FTW

Does anyone remember the episode where they drove cars across Africa? I was reading in Practical Classics today that they went back to Africa, retrieved Oliver & brought him back to the UK. They did a full restoration & presented him to Hamster.
