Jim Thorpe Run 3 (JTR3) - 06.03.06
Jim Thorpe Run 3 (JTR3) - 06.03.06
Same as last year, I’m announcing the date for Jim Thorpe Run 3 (JTR3) just so I can claim my spot in the calendar early.
What can I say? I’m an engineer, I like to plan ahead.
This first post will be updated as things change and develop. New info will be added toward the bottom of this post.
The date: Saturday, June 3rd, 2006
The place: The Cracker Barrel in Hamburg, PA
The time: 10:00am (driver's meeting at 9:55am – please arrive AT LEAST 30 minutes earlier)
Additional Jim Thorpe Info and pics here
We'll be splitting the run into groups of about 15 cars. I think I have enough group leader volunteers that there won't need to be a limit put on the number of cars this year. I don’t think we’ll get a ridiculoulsy huge turnout, but at least this way nobody should be left out.
Directions to the Cracker Barrel:
- I-78 West to exit 29B for Rt. 61 N toward Pottsville
- Right at first light after ramp (Jetson Dr)
- Bear right after the gas station on your right and follow that road to the Cracker Barrel
Our lunch stop will be a picnic/BBQ at my parent’s place with Leiby's ice cream available for dessert.
For those who don't know Leiby's ice cream, you're in for a real treat!
Lunch stop:

The BBQ lunch will be $5.50 per person for hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, soda, chips, ice cream, etc. Change from last year: If you want to sign up for the BBQ, please Paypal the appropriate amount to JTR@njbaglady.com (please include your screenname with your payment so I can keep track of who has paid). Money will be refundable (minus Paypal fees) until 2 weeks before the run, at which time I will begin buying the supplies we’ll need. All payments must be received at least 2 weeks before the run or you will not get lunch. If the BBQ/ice cream doesn't interest you, feel free to bring your own lunch.
Once again, we’ll also be planning a trip to Becky’s Drive-In after the run for those who want to enjoy a truly American movie-going experience. Details will be provided once the theater opens for the season next year. If we’re lucky maybe they’ll have fireworks like they did last year. Movie titles are only announced 1-2 weeks ahead of the date so there’s no way to know what will be playing until then. There are some hotels and B&B’s in the area for those who want to spend the night after the movie.
What you need to bring:
1. Two way radio
2. Full tank of gas (you can top off near the starting point)
3. Folding chair if you want to sit during lunch. There will be some chairs available, but I can't supply enough to seat everyone!
4. $5 for parking in Jim Thorpe. Sometimes they charge, sometimes they don’t, but be prepared.
5. Folding chairs, jackets and/or blankets for the drive-in. It got pretty cold last year when the sun went down.
6. A portable radio for the drive-in. Trust me when I say that the stereo in your car (at least the stock stereos) DO NOT turn up loud enough for you to hear them.
This event will happen rain or shine. There will be a canopy set up that is large enough to make sure our food stays nice and dry. There will be a couple other smaller canopies as well, but probably not enough to keep everyone dry if it’s raining.
Other useful stuff:
When you arrive at Cracker Barrel:
1. Please arrive no later than 9:30. We will be leaving at 10am.
2. Please park along the shoulder of the road behind the Cracker Barrel parking lot. You will see my car parked there. There is not enough space in the lot to accommodate everyone and parking along the shoulder will automatically line everyone up for the run.
3. Please come sign in with me. You'll need to sign a waiver, and pick up your route sheet.
At the BBQ:
1. We will be parking on the grassy field to your right after you go up the driveway. Please don’t tear up the grass unless you actually want to see my father kill me.
2. There is one bathroom for your use, located in the house; straight back as you enter the front door.
3. We’ll have three grills going, so hopefully nobody will have to wait too long for food.
4. Feel free to wander about. The grist mill down the hill from the BBQ area was built in the 1700's for any of you history buffs out there. There is a little historical marker posted in front of it. The mill no longer functions.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me or post here.
Confirmed so far:
After I have received payment for the BBQ, I will indicated the number of people, next to your name. If you have paid, and don't see anything next to your name, please contact me.
