Anyone else got any quotes for installation?
I think they come primed but if I'm wrong please let me know.
Thanks
Jim

I was quoted a price of install-at-dealership: $3100, but he is having it installed at the port, and that will cost me only 2650. (That's the kit, plus install cost, on both of those.)

i believe that includes the cost of painting as well, not sure if it's pre-painted or not.

Picked up my JCW Aero kit today at the dealership. It came packed carefully in 4 very large boxes. There are 5 large pieces and one plug (for tow hook access) that came primed and ready to paint. I had minor scratches on one, so I just finished touching that one up. I've got time scheduled in my Community College's paint booth tomorrow where I happen to be taking an Auto Body course. We decided to do the diffuser in black as was done on the JCW kit in the original JCW photos. Also with the kit is a new set of grills, grill surrounds, fog light insets, chin spoilers, 2 inner rocker pieces per side and the outer rockers and various other bits all in black.

karl; any chance you could snap a few pics before, during, and after your painting process? I'm very interested in seeing how the new JCW kit looks!

Thanks,
Ryan

Hey Karl,
It must b a relief to finally have it. Keep some notes about your install. I don't have a history of moding but I'm actually tempted to add the aero kit or pieces myself. Do you have a paint code/mix from MINI to get the color right or are you visually matching? I also have the MY. Also, you are keeping the Wheel arches black, right?
Thanks
Jim

Good question Jim. I tried Sherwin Williams, but they didn't have formula for it yet. PPG didn't seem to show it, but eventually I found it on Dupont's website. They recommended a paint shop 5 minutes from my work and 2 hours and $150 later I had a quart of basecoat and a quart of clearcoat. I shot it several hours ago. Didn't come out perfect, but you don't make an omelette... Also those scratches ended up being a real pain. My plan to build with primer (they were very shallow scratches) fell to pieces when my prep solution washed my rattle can primer right off. So I had to punt on the rear bumper and will paint that next week. Yes I plan to keep my arches black.

Karl-the arteest

Hey Karl,
Paint ain't cheap I guess. I just picked my MINI up today. The more I look at it the more I like the black accents (whl arches). I got a price of 1900 for just the kit from my dealer -- yikes! I think the Parts guy made some mistake. There is no way they can sell them for that -- unpainted. Unless they can paint them and install for under $700 -- thy have to be kidding.
I also got a price from Classic MINI in Cleveland, OH. -- under 1300 primed plus 200 -300 shipping (they will not ship them painted.) I'll need to call the Service/body guy there and get a quote for the painting and installation out of curiousity. I suppose a good body shop can paint them and install them for less. Cleveland is 7 1/2 hours away from here so it would need to be an overnighter for me. I've never seen the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame so that might be something to do. I wonder if Foghat made it in there yet, or Cat Stevens?

Try Morristown MINI in NJ. A little closer to you.

Thanks,
MorristownMINI was the high price I got. I'll have to call them back today. They have been very good on other prices so I'm surprised they were nearly $400 over the MSRP. I'm pretty sure that price must have been a mistake.

BTW, the kit comes in 4 huge boxes (filled my pickup truck). And while packed reasonably well, I'd be a little worried having them shipped to me.

Not that it has anything to do with the kit, but after 2 trips through the paint booth, rubbing out the nibs and polishing and waxing the colored parts, I began fitting it tonight only to find my paint color is off a shade. ARGGGGHHH! I guess AMVIV and our R56 with an Aero kit was not meant to be.

Wrong color! AAAHHH! I feel your pain Karl Are you now going to sand it back down, or just shoot over it? Any ideas how the shade/color got mismatched?

I'll probably scuff degrease thoroughly and add 2 more layers base and 2 more clear.

I had a local paint shop mix the paint according to a formula that was in the DuPont database. Important to note that because our car is Mellow Yellow which is a new color, I had a hard time finding a paint company who had a code in their line. So beware if you buy Mellow Yellow in DuPont.

Paint guys confirmed my belief that it wasn't right immediately though depending on the light it was very close. Lesson learned: When doing a partial paintjob like this paint a test panel, let it dry and compare it in lots of different light before you shoot everything.

This might be a dumn question but, you can do that (paint the arches)? I only ask cuz aren't the arches plastic? Or would you have to replace them or paint over it???

Yes, they can be painted. I don't know if it requires special paint or prep work but I know I've seen it done on R53 and R56 models...you might search here or mini2 for "color code."
