HELP! Need suggestions. New wheels rubbing on the coilover.
Hello everyone,
I recently bought a new set of RSE12 wheels for my mini, which just received a fresh paint job. After spending all night working on the brakes, I encountered an issue when installing the wheels. The front wheels are hitting the coilover. Should I use spacers or raise the suspension?
I also have a question about spacers: do I need to buy new wheel studs? And if I do need spacers, what do you recommend?
Lastly, I'm unsure if I only need spacers for the front wheels or if I should use them for all wheels. Please note that I haven't lowered the vehicle off the jack stands.
Yup, looks like you need at least 10mm of spacer.
If you bolt the wheels up solidly, do the tires just kiss the spring
perches, or are they really jammed into them?
Yes, you'll probably need longer bolts/studs- minimum safe engagement for a 12x1/5 fastener's
6 full turns...
Up to you whether you do just the front or front and back- yes, in theory the different track width may
change the handling balance of your car, but unless you're right at the edge of grip, it's not going
to be noticeable...
Another option (and it's not necessarily a good one) is to get a shorter spring. For example,
if you're running a 400 lb- inch 7" long spring, you can replace it with a 6" 400#, and run the perch up an inch.
It gives you less travel before coil bind, but it doesn't look like you're in any danger of coil bind before the strut bottoms.
I found Hyperco makes all sorts of various lengths- not inexpensive, but also good quality.
