I have a refundable deposit on a 2017 JCW (Black w/ red/black interior) and will likely close the deal tomorrow or next day. I have been looking at both 2013 & 2016-2017 models. The morning after I placed my deposit a 2013 spice orange JCW just popped up. Both cars are manual. Price difference is about $9k. 2017 is fully loaded. 2013 is medium build. This will be my "daily" as my other car is a 2019 Cayman GTS (PDK).
How would you compare fun to drive between the two? How about ride comfort (as I do have to transport my Mother once or twice per week). How about reliability? Resale for model (including color considerations).
I probably won't modify the cars, but I assume the 2017 has more high end potential with a simple tune.
I actually like the looks for 2013 better in general, but like the color combination on the 2017 much better.

I expect to close on the 2017 JCW today, so at this point my question does not matter. I expect it is a pretty divisive topic on this forum anyway. I go through the same thing with my 718 Cayman GTS where all the 981 owners are disparaging the 2.5 turbo 4 sound. Hopefully I will have my car (being shipped from Carrollton TX to Louisville KY) in 7 to 10 days. This appears to be a great forum and I look forward to learning and eventually contributing as I will be modding after my warranty expires in about a year.
Here is my new F56 JCW Arrived today from Dallas TX to my KY home. Loving it so far. Needs a small wheel repair, but overall great shape for a 2017. The two cars just fit on one side of my 30' long garage.

Looks great! Congrats on your new Mini, and welcome to the forum. FWIW, I think you did the right thing, by getting the newer one. I recently got my 2015 MC, and that is about as old as I would buy. Mine has just 32,000 miles on it, so is in great shape.
Congrats! The F56 JCW looks great! I agree that you made the right choice. The F56 will put out way more power, even in stock form that the R56 JCW. I almost bought a 2011 R56 JCW (all black) back in early 2015...I loved that thing but someone bought it out from under me from the dealer...I went down to drive it and it had just sold...long story. So, I ordered a new F56 JCW in early 2015 before they even came out with the 6-speed manual. Mine is one of the first imported to the USA of the 33 or so imported in 2015. The F56 has the gas cap on the "BMW side" and it has way better quality, hands down. Yes, it is bigger but I'll take the B48 twin scroll turbo engine (all BMW) over the N18 any day any time. We also have a 2015 Countryman S All4, and that little N18 engine is fine & torquey, but you're better off with the new engine. ENJOY!!!
