2019 MCS (but with the JCW Big Brake kit so I'm asking here). I went to check my competency at replacing the front pads today and really only ran into one problem. Each set of pads (one on the driver side, one on the passenger side) had a pad that wouldn't come out. I believe due to this piece (circled in red) that was stuck on the back of the pad. The bit circled in blue was that same bit, but still attached to the piston. I pressed the pistons back as far as I could be the pad still wouldn't get cleared to come out because of that piece.
So, what is it? And do I have to remove the entire caliper to get the pad out now? What would happen if I used a screwdriver or something to "pry" it off the pad...and I still wanted to use those pads (swapping track pads for track pads and vice versa, for example)? Also, how can I prevent that from happening?
I haven't worked on Mini brakes but, I would think the caliper would need to be removed in order to compress the pistons and install the new shoes. Also it's generally recommended to either turn/true/replace the rotors as they'll have groves in them.
I have seen brake shoes that clipped into the caliper piston, that might be what Mini is using.
They are for vibration dampening. In order to do quick pad changes at the track they would need to be removed. I had the same question when I went to do a quick pad change at the track. They are not needed at all for the brakes to work they will just have a little bit of chatter when driving is all.
Awesome, thank you! Are they re-usable? For example: At the track, and I have to pry one of those off. Do my track day, and when I swap back to my street pads, can I reuse the thing? Or do I need to have some spares to use? Also, when putting grease on the back of the pads, do I avoid the area where these things contact the back? Yeah, lots of newb questions, lol!!
As far as I know they are not reusable unless you were to get some new high temp glue to reapply them. If you are tracking I would just remove them and not use them period. Save the headache for swapping pads. I would probably avoid putting grease on them though otherwise they might not lock in place.
