Crazy warning lights
Crazy warning lights
So I am out driving around when I heard the familiar sound of a message popping up. I looked at it and I saw a image of my gas cap. I got out and removed the cap and reattached it. The light on my 2010 JCW Clubman went out. I drove around and in about a hour the light came back on. I got out and put the cap back on still again. I never saw that light but then the check engine light turned on with the yellow light around the outer edge. I went home and got out my scanner. The scanner said that it could not connect to the system. I even tried it with the engine running. At some point I got a code of p 1035. I went out for a short drive. This time a scary red light came on that showed the front of the car with a thermometer sticking out of the hood like some thing over heated. The light was on very briefly. The next day I went to O’Rileys. They tried to scan it and they could not get it to read just like my scanner. I thanked them and got ready to go. As soon as I started my engine I got a new message that showed a door.
I did buy a new gas cap, by the way but it had no effect. The yellow engine light is still on.
The car seems to run just as good as ever.
I hope some one has a idea of what the heck is going on.

Part store code readers won't read our cars correctly. You will need a Schwaben scanner sold by a vendor here in the forum. I bought one and it paid for itself the first time I used it.
I'm betting you have an evap leak in the system.
I don't know about the thermometer light....perhaps read your owners manual for that one

How old is my battery? I have had the car almost 5 years and I bought it used. It came from a used car lot in Florida that turned the tires around on the rims so that I would not see that they were bald.
Five years is a long time for any battery so I think I will take your advice and pick up a new one.
I will let you know what happens.
Thanks for the tip!

You more than likely have the intelligent battery system. Which means that a new battery will need to be registered to the ECU. The dealership can charge quite a bit for this service, a couple hundred bucks from what I’ve heard. With a Schwaben scan tool you can perform this yourself also. It’s worth picking one up, it has specific software for the MINI. It’s probably less than the dealership will charge to register the battery and you will have a good scan tool for diagnosing anything else that pops up! Mine has paid for itself over and over again.
I bought a new battery. I had my old one tested and it was shot but the car has never failed to start. My car does not have a intelligent battery.
I still can not scan the car and the check engine light is still on.
I tested each fuse and they are all good so I have no idea why it will not scan. My scanner lists all Minis. I tested it on my wife’s 2019 Clubman S and it read it like a book.
We have a appointment scheduled for the 14th and I sure do not want to pay the cost .
Any ideas?

I finally figured out how to use my scanner. It said that I had a small evaporator leak. I put some vasaline on the gas cap gasket and put a hose clamp on a hose going to the catch can. I think that between that and the new battery my problem seems to be fixed. No check engine light.
Thanks for all of your help.
