Active Sound Design. Piping motor sounds through the cars sound system to make it sound better (more sporty) inside. I coded mine out.

Me too, was the first coding change I made. It's dreadful in sport mode at highway speeds.

OT but how do you change codings? What else can you change?

Thanks!

bimmercode app. You can download a free demo copy to your phone and/or iPad to get an idea what you can do with it. But, I Don't believe it'll work on a R52. Check their website to be sure though.

Also check out the 3rd Gen FAQ.

I just cant decide which route to go:

1) Decat + standard JCW ehxuast
2) Remove central resonator from JCW exhaust (UK spec - 1 cat only) and leave downpipe stock
3) JCW Pro exhaust

Decat is just the £250 fitting fee which bothers me, and the fact I would need to get it done twice (to fit, and then remove when/if I sell the car) and also that it is not road legal...

JCW pro exhaust seems the more sensible option... but its just a hell of a lot of cash!

You should be able to grab a new muffler and get the center res delete done at any local exhaust shop. ~300$ out the door is around what I would expect.. this would get you louder more aggressive sound with pop/burble too.

*For stock exhaust, the JCW with the resonator delete sounds great and isnt too loud. Though the volume of the pops will definitely get some attention.

If you go catless or sport cat even, you will need a tune to stop CEL

If you want a raucous badboy exhaust go to JEGS.com and get a Granatelli exhaust dump (single) for a Mustang (no welding needed) and remove the resonator and replace with same. Simple wiring of switch allows you to turn this open to unleash the hounds of hell or sneak around like a pussycat.
Next on the list is how to shoot flames with an injected car.
Hear this @ MOT 2018.

See these videos:

Note this is the guy who blew up an engine with a custom 3" intake + full 3" exhaust + tune. I think he just hit the perfect storm. As others have noted, a more freely flowing exhaust really shouldn't affect the running of the engine.

In any case. Shooting flames out the back can be yours too!

Much better to shoot flames out of the back of the car, as opposed to the front!

Also, I'm friends with him IRL, he did not blow up his engine, though there were some issues with his first tune done at a local shop in town. The intake and exhaust is really, really well put together, and I would have bought it, but the work that would be involved to get it back to stock for smog with that set up would be way too much work.

Done several long road trips and cannot say that ASD is irritating. I did a test last week by shifting to Eco mode and, while it is quieter, it did not make much of a difference. The biggest difference were the constant recommendations to lower my speed (really?) or move the transmission back to normal mode (like it makes a difference at 80+ MPH).

Sorry, but so far I have found no use for Eco mode on a JCW.

The speed limit is easy to change in the iDrive thingy in eco mode. Eco and mid mode are much more tolerable with ASD on at highway speeds. It's sport that'll get ya. Constant manufactured drone :(

Well, things have progressed a bit!!

So with my car being EU spec, we only have 1 cat, a central resonator, and then the backbox / silencer.

So this weekend I removed the central resonator and replaced with straight pipe.

The sound is 100% what I hoped it would be.

No louder under normal driving.
A LOT more pops / burbles / chatter from the exhaust in sport.
No drone

The "only" thing which conerns me a bit, is yesterday we had -1c temperatures (30f) and it did the dreaded "cold start" - first time since I've owned it!
Its loud...like really really loud, for about 15 seconds. I actually thought my exhaust had dropped off, it was extremely loud and boomy. I was parked near a wall, which probably made things worse... but it is definintely a big negative point.

This morning it was warmer, around 6c and it started as per normal, which is absolutely fine, and hardly any different to standard!

I can relate to that! We had a stretch of -15-20 degrees in the hell of a place called Minneapolis and it literally shook the house. Its not something I wanted to here at 5am.

It woke my wife up and our bedroom is on the 2nd floor completely opposite of the garage

Is it not better to chop off the muffler than the resonator?

Yeah, my wife has a Saturn Sky Redline (2L GDI turbo) that she has straight-piped. Nothing after the cat but tubing. We have some verrrry nice neighbors to not complain about that, haha. A tune got rid of it though and it sounds hugely better on cold start. I've noticed that my N18 JCW isn't nearly as obnoxious as her stock setup either, so I think GM was just a little more aggressive with it.

I just bought and installed the Catless NM exhaust and I really like the tone and loudness.

I'm curious what else went wrong here, because the standard exhaust on a true JCW from the factory is a 3 inch from the downpipe back.

I personally have a catless downpipe from Mario, resonator delete and muffler delete, so a full straight pipe (aside from that second cat the US cars have) and I couldn't be happier. It's very loud.

The JCW also has lower compression pistons which allow it to be boosted higher.

It was his tune that was the problem, not the exhaust, I know him IRLz.

Also, I have a factory JCW, and I am about 99% sure the exhaust is 2.75 inches, or 70mm in diameter, not 3 inches, as the clamping bush and muffler clamp for the JCW exhaust are both 70mm. (This is the normal JCW exhaust, though, not the JCW Pro exhaust).
