Engine reduced power

After traveling out of town into the Boonies for a weekend trip I went to a Chevron in the middle of nowhere and I was down to my last couple gallons of fuel, range well under 80 miles to empty and I was actively searching a fuel station, well long story shortened, got fuel at this Chevron which I'm am thinking they don't use their Premium much, yet on my way home a few days later which didn't drive much after filling up, I had some intense fun driving Mellow fairly hard and having a great time on these country roads, then about 40 miles into my return trip home the power is gone and the engine light reads Malfunction reduced power, no boost. So I get to a place where I can pull over, check my fluids and they are good. Upon restart its good to go for just a short bit then back to reduced power. Now I get onto the freeway and can't handle this so I pull over again and shut down the car for a few minutes, contemplating the worst, maybe having the car hauled back, cause I have 150 miles to go and it's raining too boot, now I again check fluids under hood and all is still ok. So I reassure myself it must be some water in gas or something, on this nature. Now upon restarting its back to normal as I merge into traffic, boost is back and I'm just cruising about 80 taking it easy just in case, expecting the reduced power warning any second, now stays Good and has never returned, this is the first time this has happened to my car but my wife's it has happened twice, what is the cause and are the knock sensors that sensitive? That's the code that pops up. Do they need replacing with age?

It's been weeks now and never another issue, I feel my gas fillip was my culprit, yet do have some concern about the reoccurring nature of my wife's. she isn't a heavy pedal driver either, comparably.

Other than this Love how Mellow makes me smile, especially when that V8 whatever try's to loose me, such a daily rewarding car is so many ways!!

Just some thoughts would be appreciated, sorry for such a book to read..

I think if this happened more than a few times you should have it checked out. I remember a few years ago I was driving my 2007 Volvo s40 when my car lost boost pressure in the turbo and there was a strange sound under the hood. I immediately shut off the car and had it towed to my Volvo dealership. The mechanic said that if I drove it any longer I could have blown the engine. So what I am saying is that you don't want to have a small problem become a large one. I am currently waiting for my jcw hardtop to come and I know that if something like that happens I will get it checked out.

As stated it has happened to my wife's 1st and its been a knock sensor, now mine a few weeks ago and never since it went away, I'm thinking bad gas, since I was in the way out middle of nowhere, so I'm going to see if it returns. Could be bad knock sensor or doing its job by eliminating all boost. Felt like a Justa when in that reduced power mode.

This happened to me this morning. Jumped in front of a car and the message appeared. Had to drive 30 more miles to work. Will see if it reappears after work :-/
