JCW Tuning Kit and MPG

Does anyone have any information on the impact...if any...on gas mileage after adding a JCW Stage 1 kit?

I think that the general consensus is that MPG goes down because your foot tends to go down deeper and more often.

I think that overall people see 1-2 MPG less.

LOL...yeah I expected it to go "down"...if for no other reason than the one you mention.

I'll be curious to hear other responses...but if it really is only 1-2 MPG...that's really not very significant in my mind.

If I drive the car the same I really see no difference in mileage than before the kit. It is hard not to go out and play though.......

Another general question...does the Sport Button do anything anymore after the upgrade?

It functions the same as it does before the kit was installed. It really makes the car come alive even more with the kit installed. Completely different animal with the kit and sport button.

I had mine installed last Monday and had to drive 430 miles right after the install. I saw a 5mpg drop driving conservatively (40mpg before the install and 35 after), but I had filled with 10% ethanol when I left NW Mini in Tacoma, WA. I'll check mine this weekend again using 92 octane (ethanol free) premium and post the results.

Keep us posted. (I'm actually surprised at the 40 mpg prior...I'd be happy with 35 mpg).

I've always gotten between 37 and 41 mpg since I've had the car. I'd really be disappointed if I couldn't get 35. I'll be putting on about 250 miles this weekend and I'll post the results.

I wanted to test the mileage on my JCW tuning kit so I did a 212 mile trip yesterday and drove conservatively with the cruise control set at 69 (actual was 65 mph according to my GPS). I filled the tank with Cennex 92 octane (alcohol free) premium, AC-off, the temperature varied between 50 and 60 degrees and elevation varied between 800 and 4000 feet. At completion OBC showed 36.3mpg, fill-up took 5.88 gallons, calculated was 36.05mpg.

I've made this same drive before the kit was installed a couple of dozen times and could make 40mpg under the same condtions. I would have to lead people to expect a 4-5 mpg drop with the tuning kit, but I've heard several people state the my 40mpg, before the installtion was not typical so maybe people with a manual transmission should expect 34-36 mpg on the highway with the kit.

The kit does give a big power gain, but I think if I had to do it over again, I would wait until my warranty expired and then purchase a RMW tune and flash tool.

I have had my Stage 1 for approximately 18 months on my 2008 MCS. I was averaging approx 37 mpg before stage 1 and about 36 mpg after. This is from 25K miles of use so the numbers are more long term. The car's mileage seems to be quite affected by wind direction, accelerator use and type of tire.

I did not get the huge swings that big jim got.

+1 on this. I think the TK has more of an impact on the automatics than the sticks, at least from what Ive read here, M2, and other forums. The Aisin and the Prince are a very harmonious pairing, and the TK really brings them to life

I've had the kit for more than two years. I saw no change. But I'm sure not getting 35+mpg in mixed driving. My overall average is around 30, sometimes 28-ish. Can I be that heavy-footed??

Having seen you drive a few times, I think you are heavy footed.

See you at Monticello, May 17.

PS: Thanks for the video.

Now there's a case of the pot calling the kettle black. I can't imagine you getting 35+ mpg downhill with a tailwind.

But, seriously, when you talk 35+ mpg you are all talking about highway mileage, yes?

You got me on this one.

I was talking 35 mpg highway only because I do not drive in town much. Generally it is a commuter car. I also did not include any track mpg as that would be about 10 mpg optimistically.

You are going to be able to test out your "new" IC then.

I was getting 34 mpg on my daily commute. After getting the stage 1 I am still getting 34 on my commute. No real difference for me, my commute is 40+ miles each way in mixed driving, mostly highway. I have a manual transmission and always in sport, that may make a difference.

I went from 31.4 to 29.5. I saw the drop and started to worry. now I just enjoy it. I am hoping to see a gain after I have my plugs changed at my next oild change.

I have had the stage 1 for 18 months, my MPG went from 34.5 to 32. half the drop is the tune the other half is probably driver induced

I've had my JCW tuning kit for a couples of months now, it looks like my mileage has improved a little. I just did a 455 mile trip, mostly all highway, took 11.9 gallons, 38.2mpg.

Okay, that's making me feel a little better.

Or worse.

I don't know.

I went from a solid 34-ish mpg to low 28-ish in my automatic Clubman.

Now, it's probably a combination of the "tune", a little heavier foot these days, and running the air conditioning, but it was still a little disappointing to see the mpg drop so significantly.
