how bout this....

The lower grill on the brake duct kit has two ends on it to hold the brake duct in place. Those those ends have to be cut off (ONLY if you are doing this with the M7 lower grill) to still be able to mount the ducts to the bumper. IF you are keeping the JCW grill, there is no need to do any cutting of anything. The entire JCW brake duct grill just snaps into the grill with in the existing opening. Look at the picture in post #37 of this thread. That's what the lower JCW grill looks like out of the box and attached to the bumper.

A Dremel is a multipurpose powertool (and can be your best friend at times) for cutting, sanding, polishing, etc just about damn near anything. I had to use it to sand down some of the edges of plastic behind the brake ducts for them to fit well against the bigger intercooler (the stock intercooler is about 1/3 the size of what you see) seen in the pictures.

Clear as mud??? Hope that helps.....

Is this the correct link at minispeed.net? I am just wondering because it's only $80 and only lists it as one item instead of a right splitter and left splitter. Can someone please confirm?

This link is for the JCW splitters, the air ducts are a separate item.

I installed my brake duct kit last Friday. I'm thinking about removing it until I can figure out why it howls.

I thought at first it wasn't sealed correctly and upon taking it all apart, I found the halves weren't staying together.

It seemed like it worked until today, I noticed it hows just over 80mph. Very annoying.

I even sealed it with some epoxy that we use to epoxy plastic parts in the bodyshop but apparently it didn't work.

I understood the link was just for the splitter. I was just wondering why it's listed for ONLY $80. Is that for each piece or both? That's a deal if its for both pieces!

Is the '09 JCW aerokit different than the '08 or just the splitter?

When I bought my '09, part of the deal was that I got to keep the JCW aerokit off my '08.

It'd be great if I could install that splitter on my kit.

Anyone have any idea?

Thanks,

Mark

That should be for both, Morristown Mini has both pieces as one unit for $60.00

Question for anyone who has installed the brake kit: What is the degree of difficulty with installing it yourself, 1 out of 10, with 10 being the most difficult? From earlier pre-installed pictures it looks like a rather straight forward snap together process. But, then again it looks like you might have to remove the front bumper to do this. Can someone please give a little more details on the install, thanks!

You will have to take the bumper off. Other than snapping a few pieces together, you'll have to cut a hole in each fender liner and put two screws through each side. It's pretty simple.

Having said that..... I'm taking the POS off my car. When I put it on, I had a howling at 80+mph. I took it apart and found that some of the snapped halves (stupid design...why the hell didn't they make the tube one piece???) had come apart.

Being in the bodyshop business, I took it apart and used some epoxy to keep the halves together.

Well, I still have it howl.

The only other thing I know to do is install some sort of screen which should break up the air flow. If that doesn't work, I'm just removing the damn thing.

I can only crank up the radio so far...

Thanks for your reply orangecrush! Sucks to hear about the howl issue. I'm curious if others have the same noise issue. I love the look of intakes and hopefully their potential usefulness for future track/autocross days.

I don't want to think about fashioning some sort of plug to put inside these during normal city/freeway driving to muffle any noise problems. At 80+ on the highway the car is pretty damn quiet, I wouldn't want to turn up the stereo to override a howl.

Mine was installed by the dealer and it's Aok at all speeds. I imagine if it weren't I could get it replaced under warranty. I wouldn't worry about it.

Obviously, I'm assuming that being in the bodyshop business, I am able to install a set of brake ducts but since your's is not howling and mine is.... I'll need to check it out a 3rd time...lol.

Hello Diablito, I'm new to the group and just purchased an 09 JCW. Question for you, from what you just got, would this make it look like the aero kit? or is the aero kit different. I had seen an aero kit in the dealer and i was very intersted. Due to being new to the Mini and knowledge, i need help from everyone for all the modification that could be done to the JCW.

I also have a second question. The MINI JCW came with suspension package, but looking under it does not have the red coils. Does this mean anything? what is the different with the suspention package, dealer did'nt know much except telling me it will handel better.

Nope....

Simple though. There should be (4) or (8) halves. Snap the halves together to make 2 or 4 separate pieces/tubes.

I'm running late for work, when I get to work, I can give you better directions.

On the "tunnels" you have to put together.......they are a beeotch to get together properly....you have to line up the grooves all the way around in the top edge with the top part to get them to snap together correctly. I think this may be where Mark is getting his howl if they don't fit right. I have no howl. It sucks the ways it's designed but with a little tenacity they do go together and fit well. Additionally I have the M7 Ultimate grill in front of mine so I may be breaking up wind just enough to prevent the howl......just guessing.....

I thought mine was letting air howl through the fact that the halves don't mate perfectly.

However, I took it all apart, made sure they were snapped in all the way and then even epoxied the halves together just to make sure.

I still get an intermittent howl at varied speeds. (80+)

I do want to install a set of grills in front of them to break up the air but we'll see.

You guys need to double check these part numbers. I ordered them and they came in at over 200 bucks (my bodyshop cost)

I couldn't understand why some of the mini sites were selling them for 80 bucks.

I found out why. They're smoothed primer so you can paint... not the abs textured plastic.

Just so ya know.

So Mark,

I need to take the bumper off to get the new Brake Duct Grill in and then all the pieces should snap together? Is the splitter pretty simple then also?

Sorry, went to the beach this weekend.

Yes, take off the bumper and once you get the ducts snapped together, it's very easy. If memory serves me correctly, there should be (4) tubes. 2 front tubes and 2 rear tubes. (one set in front of the radiator support, one set behind)

It's pretty straight forward once you have the halves together.

Hope that was some help. I wish I had taken pics.

Thanks minitauro, I really should have taken pics but I'm terrible at documenting my mods.
