ALTA / JCW shift indicator DIY for the R53/GP

And does anyone know how these miniature connectors work? I have never seen these types of connectors before. Just looking at the design, u strip the wires, lay one wire in one metal channel, and the other wire in the other metal channel? and then fold over smaller piece to act as a cap?

I've done that already, but Adam posted that the shifter would come with the "proper hardware, instructions, etc." I am not sure if I received these or not. Just want to figure out what materials should be included before I dismantling the car.

definitely looks cool, do you choose the shift points or is that done for you?
I also saw this vid on youtube, wondered if anyone knew what this was about:

Hey folks! We should (not saying we did) have included some connectors to replace those crappy scotch locks. (BTW: BMW supplies it with those! Yikes!) They totally stink.
Check the package for a set of blue connectors that crimp over the wire. Then you plug the male connector into it. That is what I did on my personal cars. If those are missing, my apologies. Let me know!

As it turns-out, the OEM top plate with the Boost/Volt gauges is curved far too much to match the shift light indicator pod.
If I was to install them, there would be large gaps on the front and sides of the pod and that would just drive me nuts.
So my loss will be someone elses gain. Check-out the Marketplace shortly for a good deal.

Has anyone successfully cut/spliced/soldered this?
I just got it in for my B-day and want to cut the wire running to the lights themselves, drill a hole in the mounting plate, snake the wire through and resolder the wires (looks like there are 6 of them). That way the wire isn't visible on the steering column. then I want to solder into the wires on the car rather than using the connectors.
Just wondering if anyone else did this. I hate hacking things up before I even get to use them.

Well I put it in today. Didn't bother to cut and solder when I realized how little wire shows. I also just used the connectors given rather than solder into the obdII wires. I had to fight with that for 2 hours to get it off so I could put the connectors on... but I finally got it finished...
and I have to say this thing is AWESOME! Cudos to Alta for figuring it out . I think I'm going to get more speeding tickets now though
And that middle green light is BRIGHT!

Thanks for your help!

OK, I moved the thread. The whole purpose of this JCW Garage is for all 1st Gen JCW stuff, and your mod definitely applies.
