Darn marc you beat me to doing the LEDs haha

I planning on orange ones behind both grilles, a boot one, foot wells, and either wheel wells or undercarriage

But I had to post pone that because now I am going for the carputer it will basically just be the touch screen (with a great mounting place i figured out...and will post some pics on SSM when i do the install) and my laptop behind my seat so I can take it in and out easily

 

I want to experiment with the LEDs and my Brake Lights. If you have seen a Line of Fire like the one on my wife’s SUV, I want to purchase two of the black plastic inserts in the rear bumper of my R52. Any suggestions?

 

I installed mine behind my grill on the weekend. I drilled two small holes in the clips for the top of the grill. I then zip tied the LED rod there so that the rod is on top of the clips. It cant be seen from the outside of the car but the blue glow still shows through the upper grill.

 

Finally got around to mounting my lights the other day. I went to a car show to show them off. Everybody loved them!



That's the only shot I have unfortunetly. My camera is a point and shoot POS and it apparently doesn't like bright blue lights. This picture a friend of mine took.

Imago,Yo'sDad, and IrishCooper since you guys seem to be the pioneers of this great mod I'm gonna ask you. I read all the pages and no one has posted anything about maintaining the factory boot light and incorporating a switch in the circuit to go from the led strip (when the shelf is in) to the factory light (when the shelf is removed). The only thing you'd have to add is a two-way switch between the factory wiring and the resistor to the led strip no? I'm pretty sure they make switches that have two way power than a single on and off right? In other words one way of the switch cuts power to the led strip and sends power to the factory boot lamp and the other way of the switch shuts off the power to the boot lamp and sends it to the resistor and then to the led stip. This in theory would work perfectly fine right? Any thoughts? If this does work I'm most definitely doing it this way cuz I usually have the shelf out (mostly to hear the exhaust tone) but occasionally I have the seats up and the shelf in place. And to repeat what everyone else here has said "Thank You!!" for being such innovators and allowing us to share your imagination. Gotta love the Mini community

Do you mind me asking exactly what products you used and where you mounted them? Looks pretty sweet. I'm not much of a modder, but I certainly can handle installing some cool lights

 

You can keep the existing festoon bulb in the boot light socket (if you want to). I chose to remove it due to the difference in color (White/blue LEDS + yellow light from the festoon ).

 

IIRC, all light products are coming from Oznium. They have great prices on their LED strips. I bought the 19" strip in white

 

Skillet, thanks for the nice comments. Yes, a switch like you describe would do the job nicely.

I did this a few years ago. It is easier then you would think. My led will come on at either a pre-set boost psi, rpm range or just on all the time. It will blink steady, oscillate in and out or back and forth. Total kick at night. I just have to be careful using it on the street.

 

How do you make it come on with a certain rpm range? That would be awesome if I could hook up my system (when I do finally get around to doing...which will be grill lights and probably wheel well lights) to come on by a switch, or the option of fading in with a certain rpm range

This is a picture of part of the system I assembled that is mounted in the rear seat area. It controls not only different lights(scoop and NOS purge) but my CAI,header and oil cooling fans,LP augmentation system, primary and secondary NOS, water/meth injection, high boost auxiliary fuel pump and a couple other things. The 2 web sites at the top gives information on the MSD RPM control device. It is easy to wire into anything you want RPM actuated.

Now is there a way to set it up so power wouldnt start until say 3500 rpm and wont go to 100% power until say 5000 rpm?

Ya kinda of. HMMM ? I am not up on LED technology? So I do not know if the unit I use for my fuel pump and water injection pump would do that for the LED. It is a devise that senses engine RPM and automatically increase the voltage at a pre determined RPM. So you can set it to start at say 12VDC @ 3500rpm and have it increase all the way to 24VDC @ 5000 rpm. I know on a regular bulb you adjust the brightness but I do not think the LED would work the same. But you could stagger regular LEDS with High intensity LEDS that would come on at a higher RPM ranger.

 

But then how would you show it off at shows and the Cagans meet!?

Turns out I'm getting ALOT of flickering when I turn my headlights on. Only in the boot though. Would these resistors work? If so, which ones?

What device is that? Would it be able to do 0VDC and go up to 12VDC?

Just gotta keep reving it no I think I will have it linked to a 3 way switch...on, off, and alt...alt would be the rev trigger and the other would just be straight on all the time

Mini_Marc I know its a lot of pages but try reading the whole thread...besides there is a lot of great ideas and information on this mod. Hope this helps. And like Yo'sDad said you can just go to Radio Shack and get them instead of having to wait in the mail for them to come from Oznium.

Okay, thanks Steve, I guess those resistors wont work then. I did read the whole thread, must have missed that post though.

The only reason I'd get them from Oznium would be that I may be ordering some more lights, and figured, what they heck? For 5 cents, it can't hurt. Now I know though that they wont work, so it's off to Radio Shack for me!

I was going to install my boot and footwell lights this weekend but its reaching near record heat here in NY this weekend so I think I'm gonna put it off till next weekend.I'm planning on installing a two way switch so that I can keep the boot light when the tray is out and then switch it to the led's and turning off the boot lamp while the tray is in place. Should be good!!

I have 10 tubes of neon on my cooper! So im pretty much lit up every where

two 9" under the dash, one 36" in the trunk, four piece underglow kit, and two 9" and one 15" in the engine bay.

 

Now you have to install lights under the front seats, so the back foot wells glow
