How and how hard is it to remove dash?

My dash creaks alot and I would like to remove it and Dynamat the bottom of it, much like I have done to most of my car. Does anyone know how many screws I need to remove? Anything will help

I'm pretty sure I've seen some threads on this. There are also threads on how to solve the dash rattle. I thought mine would have to be removed for this, but the dealer just put some thin strips of insulation along the dash where it meets the windshield. Works great!

Over all, it's not too difficult. There was a slight problem with removing the panel under the steering wheel. I highly recommend the Mini Cooper service manual 2002-2004. You can get them on ebay or amazon.

To remove pad...

remove the two plastic panals covering the end of the pad, one each side.
There are two screws on each end. Remove them. Lower the steering wheel to get a bit more access, and move the pad forward and up. Out it comes! I just removed mine (again) and used contact cement to cover the top of the plastic dash under the cover with felt.

I revmoved it and it was way too easy. I didn't even remove the tach torx bolts. I Dynamated the underneath of the dash, it cut down some of the creaks but there are still litte critters makings sound closer to the window.

Also Tuls, can you call me tomorrow. I need to talk to you about bring in the car this week.

OK, I tried this last weekend on an '05 MSC, and it didn't work! There were 4 large Torx bolts inside the defroster vents on the dash pad, so I removed the 4 side bolts as per instructions, and the 4 larger bolts in the dash vent, but still that sucker was attached to *something* darn it.

Any hints much appreciated thanks,

You have to really want to do it. See post #13 in this thread: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=58517

DEPENDS ON THE YEAR!!

If it's a 02-04 (2-peice dash), then only 4 torx screws...

If it's a 05-06, then you have to remove the glove box, BOTH A-pillars, all 3 peices of the dash trim and like 8 screws... Also, the A-pillars have tabs that, if damaged in the removal, CANNOT BE RE-ORDERED separate from an entire new pillar assembly (so be very, very careful!).

In other words, it's a LOT more work to remove the later models' dash.

That's because on the '05 and '06 the A-pillars hold the dash, as well as several screws that are hidden behind the painted trim panels. I had this exact same issue trying to do my speedo gauge face replacment. Luckily, you don't have to pul out the dash for THAT project, but you certainly do for this one, I'm afraid...

Thanks ImagoX! I felt there was more to it, and your description fits my experience very well. And the A-pillars are a beartch, having had the Dealership do them once already. I think I'll live with the rattles and creaks...it's good for building character, and I need that anyway.
cheers,
