>>It's too bad you have to paint part of the kit to match your MINI. That's one thing keeping me from doing this mod.<<
Yeah, me too. Of course, I could always get off of my *** and actually call the dealer to see how much a can of paint is. I think you can get it in spray cans, so how difficult can this be? I'm not sure how applying a clear coat works, either. Of course, I could always get off of my *** and use the forum search function; I'm sure one of the other threads about this mod has that info.

Guys - this is a very easy thing to get past - the rings comes already primered in a dull grey - so yes,you will need to paint it. How did I do mine? Bought a $3.99 can of Testors black spray paint and looks incredible.
They even have a color that matches close to the silk green - you may want to check out your nearest hobby shop.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

I had the dealer paint mine. They didnt give me a price up front. When I went to pick ou the part it, they charged me $40
Oh well, it was worth the cost a effort!
BTW, buy them at R-Speed. Mine was a birthday present. The folks who purchased mine paid $125 at the dealer, so all together it was $165. Last time I checked, R-Speed was only charging arond $75 for that $125 part!

Ordered ours from R-Speed also-painted the ring flat black to match the trim-it looks great. Much cheaper than ordering from MINI. Haven't put it on yet-will do this weekend but it doesn't look too difficult-got additional directions from R-Speed off
MCO.
MCO.
Ralph Schomp in Denver told me they couldn't order the spray base/clear to match my car. I told them I had seen aerosol cans online here that had "MINI" factory markings on them but they told me they couldn't get them. I ended up ordering from PaintScratch online. Haven't tried it yet. I'll let you know.
>>I think there is a Hamman Lid that is I believe all aluminium. Ring and lid.
I believe I've seen that one advertised. I'd certainly have to see it in person before I'd be willing to shell out the kind of money that is being asked for it tho.

Peter, any insight into how exactly to match chili red? Matching black to black is one thing; even if it's not perfect, it's not going to look bad. But getting the wrong red... I shudder to think of it. If I thought I could match the color dead on, I would likely be all over this mod once my free-money-that-should-have-been-mine-in-the-first-place tax return check arrives.

S Gas Cap Fitted to PW/B Today
Greetings. I fitted a MCS gas cap to my PW/B cooper today. My dealer in Philadelphia wanted $500 to do this install. Having some common sense about me I decided that there was no way that I was going to pay them that kind of cash. I ordered the complete kit from RSpeed ($92.50 including shipping) and then had a body shop (that the dealer uses anyway) to paint and clearcoat the trim piece ($65.07). Rspeed made sure that the chrome gas cap that I received was in %100 perfect condition (the first one they pulled off the shelf was marred and informed me that they are waiting for replacements, this was very much appreciated indeed.)
Since the weather was nice today I took advantage of it and decided to go for it. I had read the directions that came with the kit (from RSpeed) about 6 times and I was confident that I can handle this. Suddenly it dawned on me that I had leant out my metric sockets/wrenches so I was forced to attempt this without removing the tire from the driver's rear.
Simply followed the directions (with the exception of not removing the tire to loosen the filler neck) and in 37 minutes I was all finished. Looks fantastic. Really adds something to the car.
Thoughts on the process. Definitly need WD-40. Although it helped a lot you still had to pull like hell. Yes, it would of been easier if you took off the tire and loosened the filler neck but it is do-able without.
Total cost: around $150 dollars and 30 - 45 minutes of my time (plus time to drop off/pick up the trim piece that was painted). Remember the Dealer wanted $500!

update on chrome gas cap for Cooper. MOSS MOTORS is now selling a chrome gas door
to replace the painted one on Coopers. About 100 bucks and S owners won't laugh at you for putting an S cap on a Cooper. It locks just like the stock one.

Yeah - Chili red will be tough to match - best to consult a body shop for the right hue of red - it will be worth the $40. Also, you should never pay more than $50 to have this painted - if t6hey quote you more, move on to the next guy. In fact, one of my customers had oone painted by buying the body shop painter lunch.
Hamster: You car is incredible! Love the lid - glad you were happy. Do you have an feedback on how to improve on the instructions? If so, please PM me as I know it may help for future buyers.

If you don't have your metric sockets/wrenches handy you can find an equivilant SAE tool. As long as the bolt/nut isn't too tight you can probably use a similar tool in a pinch...

Greetings from accross the Pond, i got my MC on saturday with aero kit, 17'"s m-spoiler loosk the biz, oooo an white lights! i just had to have the cooper S style fuel cap cover, i ordered it from MINIMANIA.com for about $70 (£55) and it cost me about £10 to ship it to the UK i tried to take the origional cap out without taking the wheel off but i was too afraid to damage any thing. I took off the wheel followed the r-speed instructions, it was a doddle i didnt even need the WD-40 to loosen the rubber possibly cause the car was so new/ it was a warm day (took 45 mins- 1 hr).
any ways it looks excellent, dont worry that you have to paint the cone insert $40 is nothing to know you have had a good spray job, and in uk its like£20 and i know id not get the finish like they did at the garage, and the paint and laquer would have set me back nearly £10 so.. any ways its a must have accessorie.<IMG SRC="
