Interior/Exterior After Market shift knob question.
I'm thinking about an after market **** for my S (delivery of my MINI in a month or so). From other threads I've found out that the **** presses on (no threads). Is this the same type of fit as the BMW *****? How could you fit a standard after market theaded **** on to the MINI's shifter? Is it possible? And does it fit right or just mess the shaft up so you can't put the original back on later? Hope someone can help me out. Thanks.
The design is the same as that of the BMW, but there is a bit of a size difference: I've got the Whalen **** and they figured how to adapt theirs to fit the MINI (PM our own DougW for details).
A lot of the others (MOMO for example) have set screws that clamp the **** collar to the shaft with little damage - when the screw is removed, the stock type still fits.
.... and, yes, a threaded type requires reworking of the shaft ...

Yes, you can do away with the stock mounting method by using one of my *****.
I came up with this idea after buying an aftermarket **** for my own M Roadster, and decided that there had to be a better way of fitting a **** onto the stock shift lever.
I've been selling lots of them to you MINI guys the last few months, and most of them have had custom CNC engraving done to them; shift patterns, screen names, car names, wing designs etc.

Mine pulled off when I down shifting to second so I put one of these on.
This has a universal adaptor and takes 5 minutes to install. Fits your hand like a glove. I turned it a little off center to the right to adjust fo the angle of my arm to fit my hand perfect. it looks awsome and feels great. This should come standard with the sport package.
Mine has heavy polished chrome at the bottom half.

The MOMO has set screws. You put a small adapter on, then you unscrew the bottom piece. Next you put the bottom piece on followed by the shift ***. Adjust the angle of the *** to fit the angle of your hand (Your arm is not staight on, a little kick to the right makes it a perfect fit.) Then you screw three set screws in (Come with little allen driver). Last you screw the bottom shaft to the *** and your done.
The MOMO may cost more, but is is form Italy and very well made. You will not regret it. they have many styles, this one is made to fit like a glove. I can feel the shifting more which gives a nice sporty feedback.

I do agree about MOMO's quality as I own a MOMO Racer seat and "Jet" leather steering wheel in my 92'Honda Civic. Their items are ridiculously expensive but worth it. I may install some MOMO gear in my MCS some months after I get car, who knows! Ractive has some great shift ***** as well. Awesome MOMO shift **** by the way!
I might be ordering another WHALEN **** soon! I like the quick release aspect and the option of engravings... I might get my dualM's with the center star.
How about this? Monday, Tuesday, wednesday, etc
The Whalen **** looks good!! I have about the same size polished aluminum with set screws in my car but what I did was to cut off about an inch off the shaft and installed it, didnt like the looks of the extremly long looking shaft.. now the top of the **** is about on line with the bottom of the toggle switches..Looks really good and shortened the shift throw abit! inexpensive short shift kit??
Have a GREAT day!!

had this on my car for about 12 hours, had to remove it as it sat too high. (need a short shifter to use it) I had to replace it again with the one from rspeed.)

I extensively modified a BMW ****. I took photos of the process and will post more detail sometime in the next couple of weeks. It sits exactly at the stock height and involved no modifications whatsoever to the stock lever.

You can always cut the shaft to install at stock height. I am 6'3" so I like my seat back. The extra distance helps me shift from darn near the back seat. My best advise is for someone to purchase the style that fits his or her needs best.
Then find the best quailty shift *** at the style they choose. You do get what you pay for.

Just ordered my UUC shift ****. It's well made and should blend perfectly with my anthracite interior. Now if I can avoid giving myself a black eye or a broken sternum while removing the stock ****! Will post pics once it arrives and is installed.
Here is a picture of my Whalen installed. Best modification you can do.
