new roof skin

Onasled, what's involved in fitting a new roof skin? You just cut the old one off and weld on a new sheet?

Where did you get the new roof skin?

Is the roof of the sunroof cars structurally identical to non-sunroof cars, apart for this roof skin?

Cheers,

so... an update from my laboratory.

my goal was to replace the large sliding glass with a lightwieght replacement.

i tried one made from fiberglass.... that didnt work. its was just as heavy as the glass.

then i made one from lexan... very promising. the first version fit perfect on the x and y but not in the z. the second version has yet to be made but has been brainstormed and isnt far from completion. its substantially lighter than the OEM glass.

at the track ive just taken the glass completely out. the difference is amazing. handling and turn-in are dramatically improved.

so are you just fabbing up a lexan sheet that has the same attachment points as the glass. Basically a drop in replacement? Do you lose opening functionality?

sounds really promising.

Samtrak,

This is great, it will be wonderful to reduce the weight. I think that I know how to solve your problem. If the Lexan is not curved like the original glass is then you will not get the proper fit to the car. I know a bit about this as my family has been making Lexan Racing Windows for over 25 years. We could do this but it would not be at all cheap as we only use the highest grade formable mar-resistant Lexan. A mold would have to be made to do this as lexan must be formed in a female mold and can not be formed over a male mold.

If you go to www.proglasswindows.com you can check out the site.

Hope that this helps you,

Blake

So what would it take to a run small run of 15-20 or these?

Anyway you can check that out and get a cost per unit?

I'd be interested in one. For me the roof does not need to open. Granted that would be a nice option. I'll take one tinted very dark please.

That is all good but someone would have to front the money for the mold. Not to mention supply their sunroof.

The mold would be owned by whoever pays to have it made. That person would take the orders and then buy parts from us. That is how we do it for the Off Shore Boats and such. This way the owner of the mold can make some of the mold money back.
