For anyone who's been wanting a UK license plate for the front of their MINI, time is running out. After April 1, 2003, it will no longer to be possible to order up a "number plate" for a car in the UK without providing proof of registration.

Currently, you can go to just about any auto parts supplier and they will make the plates up for you - in whatever numbers/letters that you tell them - on the spot, with no documentation necessary. A nice addition if you're lucky enough say, to live in a state that doesn't require a front license plate. Time to call in favors from your UK friends to make a trip to the parts store for you! After April 1, you'll proably still be able to get these made - it will just take some heavy flirting if you're the right gender and/or a crisp 20 pound note discretly passed to the person behind the counter.

 

Errr, you can get plenty of 'unoffical' ones from all kinds of vendors.

I was in London over Thanksgiving and the local auto parts store, Halford's, wouldn't make me a plate unless I had papers for the car.
