removing roof spoiler. has anyone done this?

I was thinking of getting rid of my roof spoiler in my MCS. I think it would look better with it off the car. I'm not really a fan of the curved look. Has anyone removed theres? also does it leave holes in the hatch?

TIA ,
Darin

The MCS spoiler is held in place by double backed tape AND two threaded studs which are accessible with the hatch open once the black plastic "caps" are removed. There will be two holes and some adhesive residue which will need to be cleaned up.

OctaneGuy did a nice writeup on the removal of the MC spoiler and installation of the Aero Kit spoiler.

If you read closely the MC spoiler has bolts but the MCS spoiler doesn't!

MCS spoiler is all glue

If you read closely the MC spoiler has bolts but the Aero Kit Spoiler does not and uses adhesive only to stay in place.

The Aero Kit Spoiler and the MCS Spoiler are totally different. The MCS spoiler does use two threaded studs with nuts to help hold it in place.

The spoiler that they are installing is the Aero spoiler. The Aero spoiler
is all glue. The MCS spoiler has glue plus 2 studs.
The holes in the hatch are slots about 1/4 inch x 3/4 inch with round ends.
The slots are at an angle.
I had my spoiler removed and I covered the holes with 1 inch round pieces of white vinyl; the same stuff the the bonnet stripes are made of.
Take care when removing the spoiler. Heat the adhesive with a hair
dryer and use fishing line in a sawing motion to cut the adhesive.
A body shop estimated $200 to fill the holes and paint the hatch.

for the record I removed 2 mcs stock spoilers today, they do have a stud on each side and plenty of 2 sided tape.

Is this some kind of hobby for you or something?!

Seriously, I wish MINI would let us order MC-ized MCSs straight from the factory: no rear spoiler, debadged boot, no S on the side vents. Alas, they do not.

I like the idea of not having a spoiler on my MCS, but I don't think I like it $200 much. Maybe it would be easier (i.e., cheaper) to find someone with a spoilerless MC that is also PW/B, and we could just trade boots?

Maybe, next time someone removes a spoiler they could post the dimenions of the holes/slots? There just might be a plastic cap available somewhere to fill the holes.

I'll try to remember to do that if someone else doesn't beat me to it. I'll be removing my MC spoiler here in a couple weeks.

I'll have an unspoiled MCS in a couple of weeks - having the local body shop do it for me. I'll post some pix.

IMHO, it will look a lot more like a Mini, and less overdecorated.

spoiler

For those of you looking to fill the holes left after removing the spoiler, I wonder if these guys might be able to help you, http://www.bumperplugs.com/. Seems like the concept is the same and they do a good job of color matching.

Its seems there are quite a few people interested in removing the spoiler for cosmetic reasons. Don't you think Mini/BMW designed the spoiler for a reason? Back when the Audi TT was introduced in Germany it was done so w/o the rear spoiler. German drivers expressed concerns about handling characteristics at high speeds (of course we all obey the legal posted limit here in the US ) Lane changes would be "twichty". The TT has a stiff suspension but no where near the Mini. The end result Audi USA had a voluntary recall on TT's to tweak the suspension and install spoilers.

I really dont know how much of an affect the spoiler has on the mini however, I know its more than costmetic. Anyone with more info please post.

I started this thread because I dont mind spoilers on the cooper, but I'm not a fan of the curved one that comes on the cooper S. I think they could have designed something better. Something lower profile and for God sake, not curved. Also I like the clean look which is why I will be taking off my hatch wiper as well.

Once again its just something I've wanted to do. I personally think it would look better and so do a few other folks on here it seems...

The TT had a recall because, if triggered by excessive control inputs during sweeping turns at speeds in excess of 120 MPH, it would suddenly swap ends and leave the road. The spoiler that they added sticks up in the air far enough to add significant downforce. Note that the TT has a lot of weight out past the wheels compared to a Mini, i.e. more rotational inertia.

I think that the reason that BMW added the spoilers to the new Mini is purely imitative styling. The MC spoiler is pure fashion, and the MCS is nearly flat, and thus adds little if any downforce. You would get more downforce than either by putting a suitcase in the boot.

Tastes in design vary. IMHO, all the New Mini spoilers look ricey and silly. Mine is coming off my MCS to give a stronger stylistic resemblance to the original Mini. I like the rounded rear roofline of the original, and dislike the baseball-cap-on-backwards look of the spoilers. I guess that makes me a traditionalist...
