Cup Holder Issue

My 05 MCS has that piece of #*@# cup holder in it My other half moved it all the way to the left so it wouldn't bump her delicate knee and did not move it back when she got out of the car. Well to make a long story short... the cup holder held the CD eject button in and the motor kept running until it burned out. Bottom line .... no more CD player. Another one of those great engineering ideas

That blows. Makes me glad I removed mine.

Don't blame the engineers for your other half's doing.

I had

a friend in the car the other day with big knees and he moved that cup holder to the left and it kept holding down the manual AC blower button. Of course it was a nice day and had the convertible top down and the AC off, so this kept turning it back on. Was a pain.

I removed mine on the 2nd day of owning the car. Its a well engineered after-thought, but its in the way of everything... At least when it comes off, you can't tell it was there...

before I left

Mine came off before it left the showroom floor. I hated it.
It was a good idea but a bad spot to put it.

Whats really funny is that people are 'moving' them, when they aren't supposed to move in the first place. The were engineered to only sit to the right. I sold mine as soon as it left the lot.

I like this cup holder. I installed it in my 2003 and couldn't be happier. My passengers really like it too.

I like the column-mounted cup holder (the lower ones are too small for anything), but I can see your point. One of my coworkers is 6'1"-ish and one of the first things he did when he got into my car was flip the cup holder over. It didn't seem to hit any buttons though. The pre-2005 cup holder (much lower on the column) looks like a good replacement if you don't like the 2005 one.

I just put and '05 holder in my '02 and it's great! But you can bet I'll be keeping an eye on it's position!

It is cool that we all feel a bit different about all kinds of stuff including the cup holder. I for example never have coffee in my car, thus my cup holder will be soon on eBay. :-)

Yeah, I need to get rid of mine, too. I actually brought a Philips screwdriver with me when I picked up my car so that I could remove the cupholder (right after the airbag sticker).

I just did a search on eBay for "mini cooper cup holder" and someone is selling one of those lidded change holder things that come in the small front cupholders for $35!

Cup holder

OK! Here's the way to keep the earlier (down tube mounted) cup holder out of your way. First. . . mount it on the driver's side. Put it so that the bottom of the holder barely clears the gear shift surround. If you have the ash tray thing in the left stock cup holder, take it out, or put it in the right one. Then push the down tube mounted cup holder all the way to the right. It now covers the left stock cup holder (so what! . . .it's basically useless, anyway).

Now you don't have to make adjustments for passengers and seat movements. The only negative (at least for short shifters) is that you will bump your knuckles when shifting into reverse. So. . . just remember (and it becomes a habit) to keep your hand open when you shift into reverse. Voile'.

In my car the screws are torque screws, not philips screws.

forget the cupholders upfront... I use the rear center cupholder... which holds the big drinks with no tacky look to the dash area of your car... but then again I am tall so that cupholder is just a hair behind me....

Could you post a photo of your setup? Sounds interesting. I haven't had a problem with the cupholder as it is though, my passengers know their place I don't have any big gulps or slurpees in there since any spillage is forbidden, but it has come in handy for carrying things for a bit from the store or crepe place

I'm not so tall, but I use the rear cupholder (water is the only drink allowed). The standard 2005 cupholder is a creation to behold, but it squeeks when I put anything in it including an empty bottle. I thought I could live with that annoyance by not putting anything in, but on Saturday I drove 2 persons to lunch and it got pushed aside by a knee (first time ever) and hit the AC blower. Later that day I drove 2 persons to dinner and it happened again. Such a nuisance. It's an excellent idea that's not been well executed.

I left the mounting bracket on my downtubes but took the cupholder off and tossed it in the boot. Then when I need to have a big cup or a place to store my cellphone in front of me, I put it back on. Otherwise, I use the rear cupholder.

Character

Well, you all know my opinion on the factory cup holder

(Cindy Crawford is a supermodel, but without the beauty mark, she would be just another hottie, soon forgotten).

I'd like to take it further. Cars can easily become homogenized and boring. Having owned truly 'British' cars, some quirkyness is part of the character of the car. I'm referring to the fact that the cup holder is wierd-looking, and when pushed left, contacts the air conditioning controls.

I believe taking that away takes away the quirky British-ness of the car, making it completely German. It is true no Mercedes would ever be designed with a cup holder that contacts the controls. Those interiors are 'nice', but completely boring.

So many new MINI owners just can't come to grips with that juxtaposition. A MINI is a German-slash-British car, and I believe the cup holder has been intentionally designed to be perplexing and quirky in order to infuse British character into the interior design. Notwithstanding, it is infinitely useful in function!

A ***** is a truly ugly body part, prominently hanging off of the front of the naked male form. It's gross--wrinkled, hairy....sick! Mattell's "Ken Doll" is one attempt to create an aesthetic male form without the ugliness of gonads. I, for one, would NOT cut off my ***** for anything in the world!

Gee...I've had hundreds of women look at mine over the years and not one said it was ugly, in fact, they all liked it....maybe you should see a urologist??
