Swapping window switch with ASC/DSC ?

One of my complaints with my Mini is not being able to hit both window switches with one hand at the same time. You have to use both hands, or one switch then the other. (And it's not like our power windows are breaking any speed records as it is)

Has anyone tried switching the switches for ASC/DSC with the right side window switch? That would give you both windows switches side by side like they should be. They are both the same momentary style switch so it should be a piece of cake.

the only problem is the little white lable above the switch. You'd have to come up with a way to relabel them to look right.

I'm going to try it regardless when I get some free time. Just wanted to see if anyone had attempted this first.

I have fairly small hands and I am able to do both at once with my pinky and index finger.

I use my index finger and pinky finger at the same time to run both windows up, though I do have big hands.

'Relocating' the switches would require some cutting and 'rerouting' of the printed circuit traces on the board that makes up the switch bank, this is not entirely impossible. The problem is making the labels look good!

That's also what I'm doing now. It's just awkward, and not a "normal" maneuver ever needed for any other car (in my opinion of course). The relabeling of switches is more for other driver's benefit as I'll know about the swap, but not anyone else in the car.

You might want to add Ian Cull's 'Auto-Up Circuit' to your car. You wont have to hold either switch to roll up the windows.

Wow, I like the auto-up feature. That's a great idea around swapping switches. Just searched and found his page. Seems like a cool upgrade but the non-load reversing is scary if something gets in the way...

And if you ask nice, Ian can even build you a custom circuit that swaps the window/ASC switch. It would be REALLY simple to swap a couple of wires. Much easier going that route than messing with the PCB. Let us know what you end up doing.

Now that I think about it, this would be a GREAT practical joke on someone - Install a 'custom' Ian circuit with all the toggles switched around.

Ian Cull's 'Auto-Up Circuit' This one of my favorite Mod.'s, very neat!

Thank you

My email reply to Steve:
There is unfortunately one big problem with your plan ...
The ASC/DSC switch is special!
All the other switches go to 0V - ie: when you close the switch, the signal from it is low.
But the DSC/ASC switch instead goes to 12V!

So you cannot do the swap you propose, unless you disassemble the toggle switch panel itself and cut & link tracks.
Certainly that would be a possibility, but it won't be possible to externally swap the signals.

What I'm considering to avoid that, is to actually take the ASC switch out of it's socket, and move it to the socket on the pass side hole. And vice versa. That should involve no actual circuitry change, only moving the switch out of it's hole. Unless I'm not seeing something like the wires are too short to move over 4 inches, or the mounting for the switch is somehow different.

Steve,

There is no such thing as "switch", "socket", etc ...

Have a look at the attached pic which is the "wiring" - the stripey gold pads are the "switch contacts"!

Ah! My old school technology thinking isn't applicable here.

Didn't realize that it was built that way. Back to the drawing board....

I sent you an email with my best suggestion ...

For more about the toggle switch panel, see this weblog article and the accompanying Gallery that I just put up ...

As a follow-up, I ordered a special circuit from Ian that does the following...

Click Up, Release, Hold Up of the driver's window switch - this little function makes the passenger side window go up at the same time. So tap up, release it, and hold up, and it mimics the driver's window to the right side as well so that both windows roll up simultaneously. No more trying to shift gears and roll up both windows. It's all in one movement now!

Thanks Ian! It works great.
