Butt Ugly Beer Cans

I don't know about you, but I think the exhaust tips on the MCS are butt ugly! I want to change mine to something else. But before I charge off and do something stupid, I figured I'd do a little research. So, here goes. Who can comment on how the exhaust tips a attached? Are they tack welded or is there some other means of attachment? Your feed back will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, ripley.

Just bite the bullet and put in a new exhaust. The car runs so much better with aftermarket intake and exhaust.

You've gone so far as to comment on the butt ugly exaust tips but haven't gone out to your car to take a look how they are attached? Go take a look and let us all know.

Hey now, Kramsieb! Back off on the critisism...I'm just tryin' to save a few steps here! If you can't answer the question, fine. Maybe someone else can!

As for replacement, I like the sound and performance of the 05 exhaust, just not the beer can butt.

Helix13.com has a fantastic can.

it's the only green unit available on the market.

go check it.

I think the only time I've heard of someone changing just their tips was when they had to saw off the old ones and weld the new tips on. Could be wrong, but I'd imagine they're held on with more than a screw. Maybe with a dash of hopes and dreams.

EAch tip has a Allen head screw that can be removed and the tips slide off the (very) crappy looking stock exhaust tubing.....look underneath the tip about 3 inches back...theres a hole with a recessed screw...

the exhaust tips that come standard actually have a humorous story behind them. When Mini egineers made the first full size models of the car to show to the execs someone noticed right before the meeting that the exhaust pipes were missing. In a crunch with minutes to spare they quickly added soda cans in place for the exhaust. so, they infact are not beer cans as it would be bad to encourage drinking and driving.

The tubing is tiny & comes out at a bizarro angle. I bought some round, short magnaflow tips to go on mine. The muffler shop had a hard time making them look right. Long story cut short: I paid to have them done twice & they still looked like ****. Once they were straight & level, they stuck out way too far. Ended up tossin' the one-ball & put on a Megan.
Good luck with the tip thing - the shorter you can find, the better...

Well, here's where I'm headed. Maybe. I'm thinking of using exhaust tips from a '65-'66 Ford Mustang GT. They are a short megaphone stlye and are stainless steel. I know it will require a little modification and some welding but I think they'd look pretty cool. Comments???

If you're feeling wealthy, MINI will sell you a pair of JCW tips.

82-12-0-303-295 ; 2 required, list price $59.50 (each, I think).

Go to www.promini.com under exhaust components. It looks like they have four different tip styles to choose from. I can't tell from the booklet I have if they are direct replacements for the stock tip or if these tips are for the supersprint exhaust system. Either way, you could probably use them.

Man, I'll bet that sucker's loud!

FWIW, I love my beer cans! They seem perfectly suited to the car's quirky nature, and I love telling the (apparently true) story of their origin to anyone who will listen. Chacun a son gout, I guess.

Has anyone found a quick and easy way to keep them clean and shiny?

Lombard - In response to your question about keeping them shiney. I got a steam cleaner for christmas and it works wonders on the wheels and exhaust. It also does a great job on my bicycle, windows, the oven, showers, etc. I've cleaned my whole life with it in less than a week. It is one of those 'as seen on tv' devices but it really works. It cam from Wallgreens but I've also seen other ones that I imagine are better at Home Depot. Hope this helps!

We didn't like the can butt look either, so we got a new tip from the dealer. It is straight on the outside and the inside is kinda coned in. It was $27 from our dealer, so you might check there. We saw it in the newest Youification workbook.

Wow - I guess I'm not getting enough sleep. I read that as "I've cleaned my whole wife with it in less than a week"!

Well, I had heard it was a beer can (...story changed to be more PC??)...... BUT......this is why I, too, will be keeping my original exhaust tip. The story is just too good!

It is not soda cans it IS BEER Cans.

"The clay model was lacking an exhaust tip. Inspiration truck when Stephenson got the idea to strip the paint off his beer can, punch out a hole in it, and stick it in the clay at the appropriate spot."

To be honest, the way some of the aftermarket tips stick out look cheap and tacky.

I like my "beer cans" but then again I like to leave my cars stock.
