I recently posted on Instagram about a very simple mod to change the UltraGauge face to match the orange MINI interior instrument cluster color. A few people wanted to know how I did it. One MINI owner suggested that I post this up on various forums because there are probably a good many people that want to know how to do this. To start things off, here is a picture that I took of the completed look:
To me, it was pretty darn close to the instrument cluster orange. I seem to only know the difference when I really pay attention to it. (And also probably because I tend to pick out any imperfections.)
For those that want to know how to do this, here are the steps:
Order a set of Color Correction Lighting Gel Filters from Amazon or wherever. These are the exact ones I used:
Cut a 4cm x 7.5cm square out of the red filter and lightest yellow filter.
Use a tiny flathead around the outside trim of the UltraGauge to pry the trim up just a bit. You don't need to take it apart. You just want to separate it enough for an upcoming step.
Put on a pair of nitrile gloves to avoid getting finger prints on the gels and Ultragague. Wipe the UltraGauge face with a soft cleaning cloth that you would use to clean a pair of reading glasses.
Peel off both sides of the cellophane that covers the red gel filter. Wiggle it into place on the UltraGauge face. If it's too difficult, then you can trim the gel fitler some more. Once seated it will be difficult to slide around.
Wipe the red gel filter with the cleaning cloth, just to make sure.
Peel off both sides of the cellophane that covers the light yellow gel filter. Wiggle it into place on top of the red gel filter.
Once properly seated, push the UltraGauge trim back together.
Adjust the brightness of the UltraGauge to match your interior brightness or to your liking.
Enjoy the orange color!
One thing to consider is to make sure that if you trim the gel filters is to make sure the area of the rectangle is larger than the UltraGauge face that you can see and extends into the trim. This way this covers all the area that the light from inside the gauge can reach.
I wish I could say there was some sort of crazy off the wall hack. However, it totally wasn't. If you'd like to see a video of it, I have linked my Instagram post with it in action:
