Thanks for the replies.

For coding the rear fog light only, I paid one hour labor ($116) at the dealer I purchased my car from. It only took me 20 minutes to install the light and new switch panel. I accepted this but not without protest.

The car was in for some other checks (2005 MCS) at the time.

Still have one section to go.

Thanks to those who contributed to this thread especially rkw. The tips were helpful.

I do have one piece to complete besides the coding. My plug that goes to the toggle switch panel is full. So my question is; What is the best way to complete the connection. Please include a brief description. Thanks in advance.

Classic Mini did sell me the parts but I live in Cincy. My dealer wanted $700 for the parts and install. The parts from my dealer were over $250, so I installed myself saving some cash, especially with the Classic discount. The rear was installed at build. I bought the car off the truck, so I didn't get to spec everything.

I believe the rear is prewired but the fronts need to be wired and they are a pain.

That's very strange. Do you mean every slot in the plug is already occupied by a wire and pin? I followed the instructions and inserted the wiring pins into the empty slots in the plug as it was described. Did you already connect to the base module and had no problem with that? The retrofit harness connects a wire between the toggle panel and the base module. By the way, my harness didn't quite reach all the way to plugs on the base module. Perhaps I didn't route the harness in the most efficient path. I had to splice in a length of wire to lengthen it.

Are you using the old instructions that are posted on MotoringFile? That one has an error, as described by Greatbear in post #15 above. I have a link to the newer instructions in post #18.

Yes, every slot was occupied on the toggle plug. It was a tight fit to the base module but I got it to fit after a couple of tries, but barely. I used the newer instructions from the above post.

That's a complete mystery to me. Perhaps there has been a wiring change in recent cars. I also bought the parts from Classic and they e-mailed me the instructions (on request). Explain your situation to them and ask if the instructions have been updated.

The older instructions have a wiring table on page 7 (the newer instructions no longer include it). The two wires connecting at the toggle panel are GE/BR (yellow/brown) which goes to the fuse box, and GE/SW (yellow/black) which goes to the base module. Out of curiosity, what are the colors of the wires that occupy the plug slots you were supposed to use?

Both of the wires are black/red. I am going to give classic Mini a call on Moday to see what they say.

I was thinking of connecting the pins from the fog harness to the pins already in the slots and running a new pin into the appropriate slot. What do you think?

I'm just speculating but I think the fog harness pins will go into the connector and the ones currently there will come out and go unused. If you didn't have fogs and no fog toggle, I can't imagine what those black/red wires should be doing. Maybe they keep the switch from lighting up if you just replace the panel without installing the fogs. The first thing to do is check with Classic MINI. Unfortunately there is not much you can test on your own until the dealer codes the fog function into the computer.

I called Classic and other than the instructions I already had they were reluctant to help(liability issues, which I understand). So I decided to pull the two wires already connected and put the ones from the fog harness in, that did not work. The swithes on the toggle panel either did not operate or operated incorrectly. So I linked the plugs from the harness to the plugs from the fog harness together and plugged the in with a new pin. So far so good.

I get the fogs coded tomorrow, so I will post the results then.

I just got back from the dealer. The fogs worked once coded. They dealer charged $50 to do the code. That is reasonable.

Congratulations! It is quite an involved retrofit, and such a relief when it comes down to the moment of truth and it works.

For 06's....

as I was reading the thread, the rear fog seems very easy to do. Just plug in the light to the prewired clip in the back, change out the toggle panel then get it recoded.

Now, for the fronts seem a tad more confusing...are the fronts prewired for 06's or not. Where as you just plugs in the lights, swap the toggle panel out (doing both fogs F/R) then getting the fronts coded too while getting the rear done as well.

I called and asked the dealer what it would cost for just the fronts and they quoted me $270.00 for parts and labor.

I'm going in for my 1st service and wondering would it just be easier to have them do it instead of having me tackle it and to bring it back for recoding.

kwk Mini and I both have 06's, and neither of our front fogs were prewired. The instructions specify 2 hours installation. It took me a LOT longer than that because I was learning my way around those parts of the car for the first time. I've done the OEM rear view camera, which is specified for over 4 hours labor, and I thought the front fogs were actually more complicated to install.

I did gain some good experience and the accomplishment was satisfying. $270 is a good price for parts and labor if you don't want to go through the trouble yourself.

Not prewired. If the dealer says $270 for parts and labor I would jump on it. The parts alone are Are that much with out a NAM discount.

Then dealer install it is....I covered myself by asking for a name and email too. So it's one less thing to worry about.

After reading through all the great information in this thread (thanks everyone) today I had the OEM front fog lights installed. I used the updated pdf from the thread (the one that uses pins 13 and 17) and everything went well with the installation.

The toggle panel lights up and the window and door lock toggles work normally. I have an Ian Cull Auto-Up circuit installed with a garage door opener and it works just as before too. But the two fog light toggles do not light up (the LED lights in the end of the toggles) and the fog lights do not come on.

I thought that I would not need any coding to make the front fogs work (only for the rear), but I see that a couple of people with 2006's did have to have coding done. Alsom the instruction sheet says I do need coding. Based on your experiences, does it sound like that's what I need?

One additional weird thing...my OEM iPod connector, which was working normally before the install, now does not see my iPod. The iPod screen displays "MINI" on it as usual, but the stereo says "no cartridge" or something like that. Can this be caused by disconnecting the battery? Does the stereo have to be set to see the iPod as a CD changer cartridge?

Thanks in advance for your collective help.

Looks like a trip to the dealer

You still need to have the front fogs coded. It does not take long only a few minutes. A word to the wise - check all of your settings before you leave the dealer. My dealers reset my top down sequence on my key fob, pathwaylights and my DRL's when they coded the fogs.

As for the Ipod input I am not sure as I instlled the DICE HD after the fogs. I would recheck the connection since it may have been loosened as you were working on the toggle panel. Good luck

I had the coding done at Ferman MINI today and my front fogs are on! Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread which made it so much easier for me to do this retrofit. My front bumper is now complete and those ugly black plugs are gone. Now I just need to figure out a way to put a dummy toggle switch in the open spot in my panel.

Hi Folks:

This is an old thread, sorry to dredge it up. Is there a URL for "Classic Mini" ? I am looking for the OEM Fog light set for my 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible.

Thanks!
Lee
