Why do OEM's do a lot of things that make no sense? There are various reasons - everything from cost control, to general non-enthusiast drive-ability, to the average size of a driver. I've had these clutch stops on three cars (BMW, MINI, and VW) for a total of nearly 200,000 miles and never had an issue of any kind nor had any premature clutch wear.
