Most craft stores supply water based acrylic paints.

OK, so I'm odd........

One of my many strange hobbies is collecting slide rules, and the leather sheaths often need refinishing and dyeing of scratches and gouges. Many companies make shoe dye products that are not paint but true dyes, If you want whatever you do to last, stick with those. Many come in a nice sponge applicator bottle. Black and brown may be available in some shoe stores, but I have purchased Red, Green, Blue and other colors on the internet. Good results can be had with these products.

Shoe polish is a good thought. Might not last and need reapplication.

By the way I still have my Seiko watch rotating slide rule from 1975! It's fun using it for calculating things when grocery shopping but it weighs a ton.
