Aftermarket Steering Wheel Install

So I bought my Mini a few months back and the biggest thing i wanted to cange was the wheel... i mean... look at it.

So I went to work, and have been accumulating parts over time. Today everything came in! My main concern with this was the plastic tab that operates your auto turn-off feature of your turn signals. I tried my luck at the problem and I shaved it down until the hub was tight enough on it to where it would move with it. Not perfect, nor permanent, but I didn't have the patience to do anything else yet here is the finished install with my quick release and where I leave my wheel when I'm parked. Enjoy!

Nice, are you planning on making it a racing mini or just didn't like the oe wheel? Aren't you concerned what will happen in case of an accident? I mean you removed the airbag.

Track/rally steering wheels normally don't have airbags, so w/ old school cars decades back. That's the trade off. The tired 2 spoke wheels are the only aesthetic flaw to gen1 MINIs. I had to swap mine out, too. Instead of shaving the plastic tab, I copied the hole diameter & location of the OE hub & drilled 1 into the aftermarket 1. Works like a charm. Here are a coupla mine:

Minisanity, I'll have to do that in the near future! As for the no air bag problem. I run scroth harnesses and enjoy the feeling of them being tight so I'm not going to go anywhere! I also auto x the mini Yes and having the racing wheel and having it closer makes a huge difference. I dig the mini button on your wheel too! Where you pick that beauty up?

One thing to mention/pay attention to, "diameter" if like me you have a chrono pack you may have problems seeing your gauges (tach, speedo) with the wrong diameter wheel.

I'm thinking of mounting boost on the left with afr on the right and then converting an old shift light I had on my 73 Mach one to work above the tach. All in due time though!

Agree on having it nearer. On the button, get 1 where you can insert a decal under the removable clear acrylic. I simply customized w/ 3M reflectorized sticker backing & black vinyl overlay (w/ MINI cut out). Wanted the OEM+ look.

Blwn, always good to see pics of your mods. It's 2014, hope it's now where you want it to be!

What's your go around for the disabled airbag? Doesn't the car freak out and throw a code only the dealer can clear?

There's a thread here (I believe or maybe YouTube) that gives information about using seats without airbags. Those guys used a 2 ohm resistor between contacts to fool the system so no airbag lights. Not sure if the steering wheel airbag works the same way but its worth a look.

is that a short or a tall base for the wheel adapter?

What about the wiring?

Hello

reading through this because I’ve just taken the wheel off my r56 and put an OMP one on but, how do I connect up the horn/turn off the airbag warning light? The connectors for the wheel controls are there but do I need an adapter?
Someone please help!

There should have been instructions to read on this info.
There should also be connectors and short wires to allow plugging in the horn button, and a 2ohm for ("hopefully") turning off the airbag light. Mine didn't work, doesn't bother me anymore..! But my horn does work.
If you have no instructions, call the manufacturer or go digging into You-Tube. Both are actually pretty simple.

Size

I’m considering OMP, Recaro and some others but not sure what size from hub standpoint and circumference. What are you folks suggesting.
