Precisely. I remember in my Mustang, Ford was known for having HORRIBLY poor tachometers, and if you wanted to drive the car hard, you pretty much had to get an aftermarket one.

I took my tachometer apart, and it is going to be real hard to find an aftermarket tachometer that hooks up the same way.

Out tachometer cluster sits on something called a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus which sends messages to the tachometer telling it which lights to light, and where to put the tachometer needle.

It might be possible for an aftermarket vendor to splice into the crankshaft position sensor and display the engine RPM on a meter, but it could be tricky. I don't know.

It looks like this MG uses a crankshaft position sensor for its signal, so maybe there ARE aftermarkey tachometers out there.

Let us know what you find out.

The first issue is the factory idiot lights-
In theory, you can install the center speedo section of the Mini One. The One does NOT come with a column mounted tach and all the idiot lights are contained in the center speedo section. You will need to have the dealer code this setup though.

Now you are free to place any aftermarket tach on the steering column and STILL have factory idiot lights.

The second issue is the coil signal-
Depending on who makes the tach you may need to install a Tach Driver so your new tach can read the signal from the coil correctly.

Trippy, does the face (bezel) of the tach just pry off? How did you remove it? I'm brainstorming an idea and need to remove my face...thanks.

...let me clarify...just the clear lens and ring, not the dial face.

He would have to order a MINI ONE center speedo directly from the UK, as the MINI ONE model is not sold in the US or Canada.

Will it work on a US spec Cooper or MCS?

I have no idea.

Is the stock tach in the Cooper S pretty accurate, so theres really no need for an aftermarket one?

Some more info: Here is MINI's fitting guide for retrofitting the factory tach in the MINI One: If you can add a tach, I cant see why you cant remove it.

No it does not.

Remove the tach from the steering column using a Torx wrench, unplug the connector and then unscrew the fasteners from the back of the case and it comes apart.

I can't remember of they have the phillips head screws filled with solder like the speedo cluster or not.

Can the speaker in the center console be the click when your turn signal is on?

Just curious but why did you take your stuff apart?? Looking to make an improved version??

I like this look better

and I'm looking at making a modified tach with just a very low profile bar of LEDs for indicator lights and a bar for the RPM indicator.

I don't like it at all.

But, it's not going into my car, so if you like it, you should get it.

I don't need to know the exact, precise RPM, just approximate is fine with me.

Different people have different likes and dislikes.

I think there's one made by Pilot, which is just a stand alone shift light, (no numbers) similar to the ones used in the JC challenge, (you could see a few of them using it in the video) But for the life of me I cant seem to remember the webpage. (have their catalog though, no web page) I'll try to get access to a scanner.

unless of course you're planning to make one your self.

Here's a product that will give Trippy something to evaluate. Kinda like the Plasma Booster debate.
