Carpet Curiosity

I've checked all over the threads but didn't see anything. My question: Is the carpet kit molded? Adhered to something molded? How exactly is it made? Im wanting to switch from old dirty gray to black. Thanks in advance!

If you mean the carpet, not the floor mats then yes it's molded. I spent a horrible career year at the plant that supplies carpet to BMW in Spartanburg.

The carpet is bought by the roll and stretched across a heated tool, then pressed into shape. After this the carpet is placed in another mold - the foaming tool, where liquid foam components are injected in and allowed to expand to the shape of the tool, which mostly matches your floor pans.
Final cut to shape for the outline and cargo net holes, etc is done with a water jet.
Heel pad is sonic welded in place and the dead pedal is usually a thermoset adhesive (fancy hot glue).
It is laid in the pan during assembly and held in place by the seats, molding and trim. It is not glued to the car.
Replacing should mostly be a matter of ordering the right part and taking out everything holding down the existing carpet.
