Interior/Exterior Should I replace this flywheel?
Should I replace this flywheel?
So I'm in the process of replacing my clutch, and was wondering if my flywheel is in need of replacement as well? It doesn't look badly damaged to me but I don't have much experience with clutches so I would appreciate any other thoughts on it. Thanks everyone.
Thinkmini, I can't see whether you have the same radial cracks I had. Hit that thing with some brake cleaner and clean it off. Look for radial cracks, uneven wear, scoring etc. At a minimum, you should measure the surface to see if it is flat so will be exactly parallel to the clutch pate. You should also re-surface it to make sure it is perfectly flat. Given the work you put into it, moving forward with a bad or not pristine flywheel wouldn't be a good move. Best of luck, Rich
Because of the labor involved, one should always replace or resurface the flywheel (if possible, IDK about Gen 2 cars, but Gen 1 you can't). On some POS cars I have had I just replaced pads if there wasn't any pedal pulse. But brakes are cheap and easy to redo. With a clutch you really can't tell, nor just do it over in 30 mins if there is an issue. Saving a couple hundred bucks is a big risk if it all goes bad if you are asking me.
Consider a lighter aftermarket one so it is an upgrade too, but I would never do all that work and not make sure the FW was perfect and you can't tell by looking.
