Interior/Exterior custom shift knob-help...any ideas
custom shift ****-help...any ideas
For the longest time, I have envisioned modifying the shift ****/lever in my r53s to one either using or incredibly similar to the style in the porsche 987/997 series cars. I've included pictures of porsche's shift ****/lever to help for those who are not familiar. There are several factors which make this modification (if using the porsche product) a challenge and preclude it from being a simple plug and play:
1) The price - in lieu of finding one in great condition that can be extracted from a wrecked porsche at a decent cost, this item runs several hundred dollars - depending on leather or carbon fiber or alcantara. The price itself is not the limitation, but rather buying something that expensive that may not be adaptable. Not to mention any cost associated with having it adapted to work in the mcs.
2) Porsche's lever attachment is essentially a twist 90 degree to lock in place set up. R53s assembly as we all know is the twist to tighten or aftermarked screw into place. Thus the **** portion would require some slight modification to ensure a tight fit once the entire unit is placed over the shift lever.
3) Porsche's shift **** unit is an entire piece - as you see below - attached to the shift boot and the console ring. Thus, to ensure the modification, some cutting and sewing would be required to adapt the porsche unit into the console ring for the mcs. This is probably the easiest part as it could almost be done at home with either a sewing machine or staples.
It is really point #2 where I am looking for help. Is there anyone on the forum who does or can or knows someone who does or can work this modification such that the porsche unit could be modified to fit in the mcs? Or is there someone who could make something similar? I have yet to find an aftermarked shift **** that is the same design as the 987/997 style. The feel of that shift **** is excellent and I think ergonomically would work wonderfully in the mcs. Moreover, the integration of the shift boot and **** is very clean.
Open to suggestions and ideas. As you can imagine, there are other things to throw $300-500 at for r53s that work right now, which is why I haven't splurged yet on the ****, just to have it lie around the garage.
I'm open to suggestions and ideas.

I would start here:

While he might not have the exact product you are looking for he might be able to duplicate what you want. And if not, he might be able to offer you advice on somebody who can.
