Painting interior rings

So I decided that I'd paint my interior rings today, the cupoholders, speedo, tach, and AC rings, along with the light adjuster and hazard lights rings. It's raining, so I decided I'll just do it tomorrow.

I have some Krylon spraypaint, mineral spirits, and I need to pick up some sandpaper tomorrow. I've run into a snag, I decided to just take the rings out today and have them with me so I can just paint them tomorrow. I've taken them all out except for the speedo and the tach, anyone have any tips on getting these off??

I tried twisting off the speedometer ring, just like the AC ones, but it doesn't seem to budge...

Also, I was wondering if I could use the krylon paint for the outside of the car, like the rings around the headlights and the side scuttles. Any help would be greatly appreciated

The speedo one is tricky all of them are held on by clips. some also have hot glue securing them.

if you're lucky and don't have the glue, then you can grab the bottom of the ring and VERY CAREFULLY pull till the clips come out.

If you have the glue, then there are a few more steps. try the first one, if that doesn't work then PM me and I'll get the step by step to you

I have used a few different types of paint on my interior peices, so far the best is the Rust Oleum Hammer paint. I have used factory paint with the clear coat and it still was very easy to chip, the other paint I tried was the Fusion paint by Krylon, that was ok, but I could not really get the Color I liked.
Make sure you do very light coats, or is will run. Good luck with the project

I used the Fusion paint by Krylon also. Luckily, "BrightIdea" is very close to Liquid Yellow. I also did 2 clear coats.
No chipping or fading.

I wish I could help on the speed-o ring, but I didn't paint that.

Just added a picture in my gallery of what I painted if your interested.

Good luck & I hope it comes out the way you want.

Yes! That's exactly what I'm doing, except for the door rings and the toggle switch barriers (how did you paint those by the way?)

What did you do as far as prep for the shift boot ring and cupholders? And is the clear coat really necessary with the krylon paint?

For the toggles, I used a straw from a fast food place. I looped the straw through one of the hoops & pulled straight out and repeat for each. Anything flexible that won't scratch the plastic can be used. Then I pushed the clips at the base of the hoops into a cardboard box to hold them up, and painted them all at once

I did light sanding on everything & painted a white base coat on the black peices just because I was doing yellow over black. The clear coat isn't nessary, I just wanted the wet look.

I hope that isn't too confusing. It's easier to do than explain

No, that's perfect, thank you. How about the grit on the sandpaper, I read somewhere else to do 500-600 then 1500-1600? I'm not really sure

Sorry for the late reply.

I used a fine grit sand paper just to rough up the shiny plastic surfce a bit so I wouldn't have to deal with chipping later...so far, so good.

Good luck & If you get it done, we always appreciate pictures

I'm not doing the door speaker rings, apparently those are fused to the door plastic, so you can't really get them off. Only dashboard rings for now, as well as cupholders/shiftboot.

Alright, sorry for the lack of updates everyone, it's been raining here, so the painting has been delayed. I just finished sanding everything down, except for the speedometer ring, cause I haven't been able to get it off yet. It's all just sitting ready for paint, which should happen tomorrow during the day. I sanded everything down with some 320 grit sandpaper, which scuffed everything up, including the glossy AC vent rings. Everything should go well tomorrow (:

Any help in the removal of the speedometer ring would be helpful!

The center speedo ring is attached to the center dash carrier. There are two torx screws at 11:00 and 1:00 that you must remove. Make sure the hazard and vent rings are off. Grab the speedo ring and the whole carrier piece will move with it, pull it down as you pull it out as it could catch the dash pad where the screws were and there is also a dumb center pin sticking up. Once it is out you can see the clips holding the center ring in place with the hot glue.

Alright, did this...You don't actually have to remove the screws, the plastic part of the dash underneath the speedo pops off, as well as the part behind it that holds the AC vent closer things, as well as the speedometer ring. I just pulled gently till it popped off, it was a little scary...Popped off in my hands and I was like !! Then i looked at all the clips and they were fine. Finally got the ring off, so I'm going to sand it tonight, then paint everything tomorrow. I'll try and post pictures when I'm done (:!

They're a bit dry-er now...And I'm taking a look, everything came out really well (:
Only thing is they have an odd texture...I was wondering if sanding with super fine sandpaper would get it off, or should I do some clear on it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Chris
